OBITUARY: He Fought at Plattsburgh "Hyde Westover, the oldest resident of Castleton, Vermont, died Monday evening, aged 91 years and 6 months. Mr. Westover was born at Hoosick February 18, 1795. His father died when he was four years old, and in 1807 he went to Sudbury to live with an uncle, Pitt Hyde, who kept a hotel. OBITUARY: He Fought at Plattsburgh "Hyde Westover, the oldest resident of Castleton, Vermont, died Monday evening, aged 91 years and 6 months. Mr. Westover was born at Hoosick February 18, 1795. His father died when he was four years old, and in 1807 he went to Sudbury to live with an uncle, Pitt Hyde, who kept a hotel. When 19 years of age Mr. Westover participated in the battle of Plattsburgh, September 11, 1814. In 1828 he leased a hotel in Castleton and conducted the same until 1864, when he retired from the business. He had always been prominent in the town, being town representative in 1837-8 and 1857-8. He was justice of the peace 14 years, a member of the corporation of Castleton seminary from 1850 t 1869, town selectman for a number of years, a life member of the American board for foreign missions, a staunch temperance man and many years a consistent member of the church. His wife, Lockey Tomlinson of Oxford, Connecticut, died 14 years ago." [Source: The Burlington (Vermont) Free Press.
