Merchant is seriously ill at her home on North Carroll street. Mrs. Merchant suffered a stroke and fell about noon Sunday while preparing to go to the home of Dr. and Mrs. W. M. Shirley, where she had been invited for dinner. About 2 o'clock that afternoon she went into a coma from which she had not awakened early this afternoon. Miss Olive Matt, a registered nurse, is attending her. Nov 18, 1937 - Carroll Daily Herald - Mrs. E.N. Merchant, 91, one of Carroll's oldest and best known women, died at her home on North Carroll street at eight o'clock Thursday morning after suffering a stroke the preceding Sunday. Mrs. Merchant, who had been in her usual good health, was stricken Sunday noon while preparing to go to the home of Dr. and Mrs. W.M. Shirley, where she had been invited for dinner. About two o'clock she slipped into a coma, from which she did not awaken. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with the Rev. Claude R. Cook officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery. The body will rest at the Huffman funeral home until Sunday morning, when it will be taken to her home. Mrs. Merchant had lived in Carroll since 1879, which, in the history of Carroll, is referred to as, the year of the big fire. She and her husband were prominently identified with the civic an social life of the city. Mr Merchant was retired at the time of his death in 1920. Mrs Merchant was born Adelaide Hughes in Mallory Town, Ontairo, Canada March of 1846. She was a daughter of John Hughes, whose father bearing the same name, was an officer in the British army in the War of 1812. Mrs. Merchant was educated in Canada. When a girl of 19 she came to Iowa to visit relatives who lived in Boonesboro, which is now the city of Boone. It was on this sojourn that she met E.N. Merchant, whom she married the same year. The ceremony took place on January 23, 1866, at Nevada, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Merchant lived at Tama before coming to Carroll in 1879. Mr. Merchant engaged in various enterprises here and for many years owned and operated a grocery store. There were two daughters in the Merchant family, one of whom, Mrs. Herman Chelius, (Lillian), of Boston, a pianist, passed away in the spring of 1918. The other daughter is Mrs. L.A. Gnam, (Minnie), of Carroll. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Gnam, Mrs. Merchant is survived by six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Merchant was the last of a family of three children. Mrs. Melvina Vanston, a sister, who made her home with Mrs. Merchant for a number of years, passed away eight years ago. Mrs. Merchant was a remarkable musician and for nearly 50 years she gave music lessons. She was organist and director of the Methodist, church choir for 45 years and to the members she was known as "Mother Merchant." She also played at the Trinity Episcopal church for many years. A member of the Methodist church, Mrs. Merchant was active in every branch of church work. For 29 years she had been chairman of a committee of the Industrial society, still holding this chairmanship at the time of her death and always assisting with the entertaining. She was also a past president, of the society. In later years Mrs. Merchant had made her home in her apartments on North Carroll street, where her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Gnam, also live at the present time. In 1888 Mr. and Mrs. Merchant purchased the house and lot on the corner of North Adams and West Sixth streets and two years later built a spacious home on the site, where they lived until 1917, when the home was moved to the corner of North Carroll and Eighth streets, their lot having been purchased by the government for the Carroll postoffice. Nov 22, 1937 - Carroll Daily Herald - Funeral services for Mrs. E. N. Merchant, prominent Carroll resident, who died Thursday morning, were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, w i t h the minister, the Rev. Claude R. Cook, officiating. Because of Mrs. Merchant's love of music, a musical service was given by her proteges. Two numbers, "On the Resurrection Morning" and "Crossing the Bar," were sung by a quartet composed of Mrs. R. S. Hyatt, Mrs. W. R. Lee, Clyde M. Bayliss and Joseph J. Wolfe. Mrs. Fred Beyer of Dubuque formerly Miss Rose Rohner, played a violin solo, Schubert's "Ave Maria," as the recessional. Mrs. Beyer also played the violin obligato for the quartet selections and Mrs. John Seeden was the piano accompanist. For the reason that "Ave Maria" was played at the funeral of Mrs. Merchant's daughter, Mrs. Herman Chelius, the solo was repeated at this time. Burial was in the family lot in the Carroll cemetery and pallbearers were G. M. Badley, W. C. Saul, William Pierce, W. H. Light, D. W. Hanssen and Frank Beiter. Mr. and Mrs. William Justesen of Council Bluffs were out-of-town relatives at the rites.
