Phillips were held Sunday at the home of his grandson, Claude Phillips, in Grant township. Mr Phillips was the father of our townsman, A.J. Phillips. The services both at the house and the grave were conducted entirely by the Masons of which order Mr. Phillips was an enthusiastic and almost lifelong member. The following obituary was read at the service: Ichabod Scott Phillips, a member of Symbol Lodge No. 321, Fonda, was born at Coventry, RI, May 2nd, 1821 and died at the home of his grandson, Claude Phillips, November 2 1905, being 84 years and 7 months old. Bro. Phillips was one of the oldest Masons in the state, having been made a Mason in Putnam Lodge in a tavern on the old Putnam farm at Pomfret, Conn. in 1846, when Masonry was not as popular as it is now and the lodge in which he was raised held its stated meetings only once in ninety days. In 1856, he moved to Clarke county, IA and as soon as a lodge was organized near him he became a member of Neophyte Lodge, No. 301 at New Virginia, Warren County, where he held his membership until about twelve years ago when he moved to Fonda and was admitted to Symbol Lodge. While a young man in the east he united with the Baptist church; when he came west there was no church of that denomination near where he lived but he was ever a loyal supporter of some church although not enrolled as a member, being governed by that broad fraternal spirit of charity for all. Mr. Phillips enlisted in Company C, 34th Iowa infantry in 1862 and was elected fife major of the band, in which capacity he served until mustered out. he was with Gen. Sherman on his first raid on Vicksburg and was at the capture of Arkansas post and accompanied the guard who had charge of the prisoners captured, through to Chicago where he was discharged for total disability. Mr. Phillips was the father of nine children, six of whom are still living. He also had thirty-six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Since the death of his wife he has made his home alternately with his two grandsons, Owen and Claude Phillips. For nearly sixty years he was an enthusiastic Mason and at his special request, we are here today to perform the last sad rites of the fraternity. His weary feet had reached the end of their toilsome journey and he was prepared and waiting for the kindly messenger to take him from this imperfect to that all-perfect, glorious and celestial lodge above, where the Supreme Architect of the universe presides, and we trust it was his portion to hear the welcome words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."
