Mr. and Mrs. McClain were united in marriage by the Rev. Francis Davies, then minister of Trinity Methodist Episcopal church in Lima, Oct. 30th, 1881. Mrs. McClain was the daughter of Catherine Book Zurmehly and Samuel Zurmehly, pioneer residents of Shawnee vicinity who moved to Shawnee-twp from Pickaway-co early in the nineteenth century. The Zurmehly family settled in southern Ohio after its migration from Switzerland shortly after the Napoleonic wars. McClain was the son of David and Julia Ann McDonald McClain, who also were pioneer residents of Allen-co. His mother was born in Warren-co. Her parents came to Lima in 1828 and built the McDonald residence on the McDonald farm located at what now is the intersection of Market and McDonel-sts, opposite the Public library. His father came to Lima from Fairfield-co with his parents when five years of age at which time five houses comprised all the buildings in Lima, and settled in Bath-twp, just north of the present city limits of Lima. Mr. and Mrs. McClain have resided all their lives in Allen-co and until their removal to their present residence in Lima in 1924 lived in Shawnee-twp on the farm where McClain established a Percheron and Belgian horse farm. Mr. and Mrs. McClain have made several trips to Europe, the last being just previous to the outbreak of the World war in 1914. On this trip McClain purchased and imported many pure-bred Percheron and Belgian horses. For many years, McClain has been called upon yearly thruout Ohio and neighboring states to act as official judge of draft horses of various breeds. Both Mr. and Mrs. McClain have been active in the Methodist church and in the grange for many years. Three children were born to them and still reside in the community: Elmer, an attorney, of Lima, Howard, a sheep breeder and exhibitor, and Harry, horse breeder, all of Shawnee-twp. There are six grandchildren. There never has been a death in the family, all children and grandchildren still living. (published in The Lima News, Sunday, October 25, 1931) * * * * * * * * * * Pioneer County Resident Dies Mrs. Ida Belle McClain Ill Three Weeks Mrs. Ida Belle McClain, 82, lifelong resident of Allen-co, died at 2 p.m. Monday in her home, 600 S. Main-st, following an illness of three weeks. She was born in Shawnee-tp, Allen-co, the daughter of Samuel and Catherine Book Zurmehly and was married to Lonzo McClain Oct. 30, 1880. He preceded her in death two years ago. Before his death she assisted him in business, traveling with him to Europe several times to purchase purebred Percheron and Belgian horses. She was a member of the Grace Methodist church, the WSCS and Gleaner's class of that church and Shawnee grange. Surviving are three sons, Elmer and Harry L., Lima Route 6, and Howard R., 590 S. Main-st; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The body will remain at the Lewis funeral home until late Tuesday, then to be removed to the residence. Rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Grace Methodist church with Rev. Vernon Van Buren, pastor, officiating, and Rev. E. J. A. St. Louis, former pastor, assisting.
