Description	:	Ida Emma Zumbrun Schwend, 95, passed away on Dec. 29, 2007, at Beartooth Hospital & Health Center Long Term Care, where she had received care and nurturing for six years. Ida, the firstborn child of Hedwig Kebschull Zumbrun and Clarence Zumbrun, was born on Sept. 24, 1912, near Clark, Wyo. The Zumbruns bought their farm at Boyd, where five more children were born. Read More	Ida Emma Zumbrun Schwend, 95, passed away on Dec. 29, 2007, at Beartooth Hospital & Health Center Long Term Care, where she had received care and nurturing for six years. Ida, the firstborn child of Hedwig Kebschull Zumbrun and Clarence Zumbrun, was born on Sept. 24, 1912, near Clark, Wyo. The Zumbruns bought their farm at Boyd, where five more children were born. Ida's father passed away when she was 9 years old. Her mother married Dick Platt several years later and bore two more children. Ida "chaperoned" her mother and Dick as they were courting. Ida attended Selmes School, which was located near the family farm and later graduated from Roberts High School in 1931 as valedictorian. She pursued her teaching certificate from the Billings Normal School (later known as Eastern Montana College) and obtained her certificate in 1933. Later, she also obtained her bachelors degree. Ida loved to attend dances and lit the dance floor with her eyes. She met Walter Schwend, her lifelong companion and soul mate, at the Bridger High School Prom while she was teaching at the Tucker School (between Bridger and Belfry) in 1935. In 1936, Ida purchased her first car, a 1936 Chevrolet Coupe. Being a woman before her time, she traveled with her sister, Irma, to Kansas and Minnesota. She married Walt on June 7, 1938, after obtaining her Lifetime Teaching Certificate. Selling her car to make the down payment, Walt and Ida purchased their family ranch on the West Bench at Roberts on April 1, 1940. The farm became home to two children, Curtis Schwend and Karen Schwend Hoines; and niece, Denise Dalley Hennelly. After her children were in school, Ida returned to teaching in Boyd and Roberts. She is renowned for being a teacher of discipline, high expectations and accomplishment. Ida was delivered to school on a tractor or snowmobile when the snow blew wildly and drifted high on the West Bench. Walt and Ida made their lives in Roberts, where they were active in the United Methodist Church, enjoyed attending basketball games, participating in card parties, and watching their children and grandchildren grow up. Ida was a member of the United Methodist Women, Friendly WE Extension Club, and was active in the Red Lodge-Roberts Senior Citizens. Ida will be remembered for her beautiful African Violets and flower gardens that included peonies that belonged to her mom, irises and dahlias. She grew a fabulous vegetable garden that was complete with raspberries and strawberries. Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Schwend. They are dancing in heaven now. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Everett Zumbrun, Irma Zumbrun Ellis and Lloyd Zumbrun. Survivors include siblings, Hazel Zumbrun Conway, Earl Zumbrun, Norma Platt Freeman and Florence Platt Steiner; son Curtis (Sue) Schwend of Roberts, grandson Larry (Katie) Schwend and their children Haley and Jared, grandson Tony (Lynette) Schwend and their children Tressa and Merrin; daughter Karen (Everett) Hoines of Red Lodge Creek, grandson Hubert (Tami) Hoines and their children Lauren and Jess, granddaughter Sheila (Howdy) Hoines Hildebrand and their children ShayLe and Danny, grandson Chris (Jennifer) Hoines and their son Colt, granddaughter Jennifer Hoines; niece Denise (Gary) Hennelly of Shepherd, granddaughter Shanon Hennelly Hinkle and her children Tyler and Zachery, and granddaughter Tenil (Felix) Hennelly Belmontez and their daughter Lillian; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Roberts United Methodist Church in Roberts, with interment at the Roberts Cemetery. A luncheon served in Ida's honor will follow at the church. Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
