Audrey Hammond Nance and Patsy Jane Nance Culp: The Smallpox epidemic struck the residents of Maury City in 1883. The home of John W. Tinsley and Mary John Hamond Tinsley was quarantined. John B. Hamond, Mary's father came to the residence to care for the sick. Inside the home were: Mary John Hamond Tinsley John N. Hamond (son of John B. Hamond and Margaret Elizabeth Richardson), Ida J. Tinsley and Ludy A. Tinsley (granddaughters of John and daughters of Mary John Hamond Tinsley). Early in the morning, John B. Hamond would go outside of the Tinsley home and leave a list on an old, hollowed out stump. This list would contain supplies needed inside the home to care for the sick. Martha Kidwell Hamond (second wife of John) was instructed to wait until the wind shifted directions, to avoid "catching" the disease, and come to the stump and read the list. She was not allowed to touch the paper. Martha would return to the stump and place the supplies and leave. John would come outside and retrieve the supplies he had requested. One day when Martha went to the stump to read the list, the note said that her husband had also caught Smallpox and wished to see his children for the last time. Martha waited until the wind changed directions, and carried William Lee Hammond to say goodbye. William stood upon the old stump and waved goodbye to his father through the windows of the Tinsley home. The first to die was John's son, John N. Hamond, who died on November 9, 1883, at the age of 21. He was buried in Salem Cemetery. Mary John died on November 27, 1883 and was also buried in Salem Cemetery. John B. Hamond died on November 29, 1883. His death was followed by those of Ludy A. Tinsley on November 30, 1883 and Ida J. Tinsley on December 3, 1883. John B. Hamond, Ludy Tinsley and Ida Tinsley were each buried in the front yard of the Tinsley home, prior to the house being intentionally burned. It is unknown how and why John N. Hamond and Mary John Hamond Tinsley were removed from the home and buried in Salem Cemetery, instead of with the other family members. Note: John B. Hamond and Margaret Elizabeth Richardson's children were: 1. Lucy J. Hamond Tinsley (also shown as married to John W. Tinsley…)(1858-1945) 2. Mary John Hamond Tinsley (married John W. Tinsley)(13 Aug 1855-27 Nov 1883) 3. John N. Hamond (2 Apr 1862-9 Nov 1883) John B. Hamond and Martha Kidwell's children were: (notice the change in spelling) 1. Cora L. Hammond Tinsley (married George S. Tinsley)(1868-1899) 2. William Lee Hammond (22 Sept 1871-19 Sept 1945) 3. Atlas A. Hammond (14 Apr 1876-10 Mar 1929) After the epidemic, Martha moved in with her son-in-law, George S. Tinsley, who was widowed prior to the 1900 Census.
