January 26, 1924 ******** Alton Democrat; August 14, 1925 DAUGHTER OF ALTON PIONEERS DIES AFTER LONG STRUGGLE WITH TUBERCULOSIS Friends of Alton were deeply grieved to hear of the death of Mrs. Frank Kettler, who died at Homer, Nebraska on the morning of August the eighth. Ida Henkel was born to Paul and Elizabeth (Pins) Henkels at Alton, Iowa, July 24th, 1890. The early years of her youth were spent here, where her friends learned to love and admire her. On June 5, 1917, Ida married Frank Kettler and since then has made her home in Homer, Nebraska. From the very beginning of the fatal disease, Mrs. Kettler showed a remarkable degree of patience and fortitude. For eighteen months, half of which was spent in the sanitarium at Tucson, Arizona, she held steadfastly to the hope of recovery; yet, when her hour came she was perfectly resigned. Mrs. Kettler was not only a devoted wife and a good mother but a charming friend as well. During the wearisome months of sickness those who knew her ultimately could not fail to comment on the optimist attitude evidence in the ordeals that are inseparable from the disease to which she finally succumbed. Having witnessed the courageous spirit that animated the invalid. Her relatives and many friend cannot but realize and regret to the fullest extent their great loss. To them her memory will undoubtly be an inspiration and the thought of her friendship a surreal thing. That the winning personality and unflinching philosophy of life so apparent during her illness, was in reality the very essence of her being can hardly be questioned when one reads the poem that proved to be such a stimulating force in her life. My life is but a weaving Between my God and me: I may not choose the colors He worketh steadily. Full oft life weaveth sorrow And I in foolish pride Forget He sees the upper And I the under side. Funeral services were conducted at St. Mary’s Church at Alton, Iowa. Interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Mrs. Frank Kettler is survived by her husband Frank Kettler and three children: Maxine, Shirley and Melvin Paul, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Henkels; her brothers: Will, Ted, and Leo Henkels, and her sisters: Mrs. Ted Steger, Mrs. Leo Keough, the Misses Abbie and Rita Henkels.
