Read More	UNKNOWN PAPER - NO DATE IDA MAE PORTEOUS - Malagash, N.S., Sept. 14 - The sudden death of Ida Mae, wife of John PORTEOUS of Malagash, at the home of Philip VINCENT, West New Annan, came as a great shock to friends and neighbors of this place. Sunday afternoon, Mrs. PORTEOUS, in her usual health, went to Wentworth with Mr. PORTEOUS to visit friends and on their way home called at Philip VINCENT's, where Mrs. PORTEOUS became so ill that Dr. MURRAY from Tatamagouche was called in and her daughter, Mrs. Willis MacLELLAN, Oliver, came to wait on her. She passed away at 3.30 Monday morning, Sept. 11th. Mrs. PORTEOUS was of a very cheerful disposition and if she had not been feeling well earlier in the day she kept it well to herself, as she attended Sunday School in the morning, of which she was superintendent and carried out her usual duties. She will be sadly missed not only in her home but in the community, a wonderful neighbor especially loved by the children of whom she was ever thoughtful. She was actively engaged in all work undertaken for church and community, a member of the Ladies Aid and Blue Sea Auxiliary, W.M.S. of which she was Community Friendship Secretary. Mrs. PORTEOUS was born in West River, Pictou Co., July 21st, 1879, daughter of the late Elizabeth MILLER and John Robert BENTLEY. She leaves to mourn besides her husband two daughters and two sons, of a former marriage (Edith) Mrs. Willis MacLELLAN, Oliver; (Annie) Mrs. Byers PYKE, Medway, Mass.; Wilbert SWAN, New Annan and Freeman SWAN at home, also five sisters and two brothers, (Maude) Mrs. Frank GAGNE, Quincy, Mass.; (Emma) Mrs. David CRORY, Chestnut Hill; Mass.; (Evelyn) Mrs. Fred KNIGHT, Dover, H.H.; (Ellen) Mrs. Fred PROCTOR, New Market, H.H. (Mildred) Mrs. Wm. CARROL, Boston, Mass.; Charles BENTLEY, Westchester, N.S., James BENTLEY, Ellershouse, Hants Co., N.S. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, afternoon at the home and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.W. HUGHES, of United Church of Canada, Malagash, assisted by Rev. R.P. MURRAY, New Annan. The message delivered by the pastor was very comforting. The Hymns sung by the choir led by organist, Miss Annie LANGILLE, were: "Unto the Hills", "Does Jesus Care," and "Rock of Ages." "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" was sung while those present paid their last respects. The flower covered casket was then bourne to West New Annan United Church, followed by a large funeral cortege, where a public funeral service was conducted by pastor, Rev. R.P. MURRAY assisted by Rev. J.W. HUGHES, Malagash. Hymns rendered by quartette of Gerald BYERS, Allison BYERS, Kenneth BYERS and Harry BONNYMAN were "Abide with Me" and "Old Rugged Cross," solo "There is No Night There" was beautifully given by Gerald BYERS. The remains were laid to rest in Bell Gift Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Edgar BETTS, Robert MacNEILL, Mitchell BYERS, Nelson MacNEILL. The beautiful floral tributes attested to the high regard in which the deceased was held. Pillow and Wreath: Husband and family. Sprays: Sister Ida, Layton and boys; Mr. and Mrs. John MacLELLAN and Otis; Brother Charles and family; Blue Sea Auxiliary W.M.S.; Malagash South Sunday School; Mr. and Mrs. Charles McNABB; Mrs. A.E. BETTS; Hilda and Edna LANGILLE. Wreath: MALAGASH Ladies Aid. Cut Flowers: Jim and Lena; Janie C. WHIDDEN, Irene and Philip; Sadie and Elzie; Annie and Bob. Those attending the funeral from a distance were James Bentley and Mrs. DIMMOCK, Ellershouse, Hants Co., N.S., Ernest SWAN, West Lanon, N.H., Mrs. Byers PYKE, Medway, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. Layton RICHARDS, Wentworth.
