Ida was known as "Aunt Ida" in early Dogtooth. An early area resident recalled her youth, "Or dear Aunt Ida Sindalsen had come to homestead in 1907 too. She was one of the few women homesteaders in North Dakota history. She lived just south of our place on section 26, Raleigh township. She had a one room shack covered with tar paper and banked high on all four sides with dirt. There were no "sod" houses around our community that I remember. Ida had a lady neighbor named Elizabeth Carney, but she married quite soon after coming and sold her claim. Many times I would walk home with Aunt Ida and stay for a few days, it was a great distance for a little girl, but in reality it was about three miles walking across country. It was such fun to stay with her. I still remember how quiet that house was, and how loud that ticking clock sounded in that room. She had wonderful things packed away in trunks, things given to her by her Danish parents. Then came a day in 1912 that I came to hate. Dear Aunt Ida, at age 47, married Rasmus Christensen and moved to new place miles away. I was heart broken. R C, as he was called, had one of the first cars around the country and they did come to visit often but it was never the same. Ida was my mother's aunt but to everyone she was Aunt Ida" Ida passed away on June 06, 1945, at the age of 79, with interment in the Raleigh cemetery. Following her death the following was written by Clara Steele, the postmistress, and published in the "Carson Press": "Aunt Ida has left us but has left us an indelible memory of a wonderful life. The world is better because she has lived. She was one of those rare unforgettable characters whose influence will be felt for many years."
