Description	:	Idella (Adella) Cecilia Esther Swehla was born Nov. 10, 1910 to Joseph Frank and Frances No-vak Swehla "behind" Spillville across the river near the mill. Read More	Idella (Adella) Cecilia Esther Swehla was born Nov. 10, 1910 to Joseph Frank and Frances No-vak Swehla "behind" Spillville across the river near the mill. She learned Czech as her first language. At age 5 she was given the responsibility of milking a cow. Many times the large family had little to eat. She attended country school for four years and public school in Spillville for the next six years, excelling in mathematics. She wished to become a doctor but it was not possible for a girl of her circumstances. She attended the 12-week Normal School, training in Fayette to get a teaching cer-tificate and started teaching im-mediately upon turning 18, working at various country schools in the area. At the worst of the Depression, Idella Swehla made $30 a month, managing to get a used Model A Ford, buy some supplies for her students, and help her mother with that amount. She loved teaching and, even years later, was sent thank you notes and stopped on the street in Decorah occasionally by grateful former students. She worked summers as a waitress and scrubbed floors at Lutheran Hos-pital in La Crosse. Idella Swehla married Joseph Pavlovec in Spillville Nov. 4, 1938. She did the farm chores as he worked more and more with limestone. They lived west of Spillville on his home farm until they moved with their two daughters to Calmar in March 1942. She was a partner in J.F. Pavlovec Rock Co. and worked as the bookkeeper, keeping meticu-lous records. Idella (Adella) Cecilia Esther Pavlovec was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Nov. 1, 2002, and all her siblings: Louise (Leonard) Halverson, Clara Swehla, Emma (Russell) Rocksvold, Joseph W. Swehla (Viola), Richard (Pauline) Swehla, Robert (Emma) Swehla and a half-brother, Charles Swehla.
