She has donated her body for research to the University of Iowa. Ila Elna Gaston graduated from Thompson School of Cosmetology in Des Moines in 1939. She moved to Ames, where she was employed at Velma and Thelma's Salon. In 1945, she moved to Nevada, where she owned a beauty salon for five years. She had this same plastic valve for more than 30 years.
