Ila Mae Cunningham was born June 11, 1937 in Alvord, IA to Walter and Hilda (Serck) Schemmel. She grew up in Alvord and received her diploma from Alvord High School in 1955. Following high school, Ila enrolled in business school in Omaha, NE. She completed her program in two years and moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1958 where she worked for the Sioux Falls Courthouse in the Clerk of Courts. Ila was united in marriage to Michael Cunningham on October 4, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. They were married for 53 years. Together they raised their children, Jayne, Steve, Tom and Joan. Ila was a wonderful wife, homemaker and mom to her four children. Ila enjoyed staying active and involved in the work world. She worked for several in administrative positions and completed her work career at Sears Payment Systems/Dean Whitter in 2000. Following retirement, Ila devoted her time to volunteer work and helping others. She was an active volunteer at Avera McKennan Hospital for over 10 years. She was also a member of the East Side Lutheran Ladies Altar Guild and volunteered regularly to help at many church functions. In recent years Ila had become an avid Mahjongg player and played weekly. She was also a self-taught pianist and enjoyed playing music regularly. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Michael; her four children, Jayne Katherine Adams and her husband, James W. Adams, Western Springs, IL, Steven Michael Cunningham, Portsmouth, VA, Thomas Allen Cunningham, St. Louis, MO, Joan Marie Rederth, Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Eric Rederth, Sioux Falls, SD, Brenna and Lynell Cunningham, St. Louis, MO, Audrey and Elisabeth Adams, Western Springs, IL, her brother, Robert Schemmel and his wife, Shirley, Mesa, AZ; her sister, Sharon Pedersen and her husband, Charles, Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews; and several other relatives and friends. Ila was preceded in death by her parents, Hilda and Walter. Ila’s family requests that memorials be directed to the Avera Dougherty Hospice House.
