Ila Marcene (Braklow) Doerder was born in Boone on July 29, 1921, the daughter of Herman and Doris (McBirnie) Braklow. Ila Marcene (Braklow) Doerder was born in Boone on July 29, 1921, the daughter of Herman and Doris (McBirnie) Braklow. She attended schools in Boone and Chugwater Wyoming, and graduated from Boone High School in 1938. On September 18, 1940, Marcene married Francis Doerder, a farmer; in October 1941 she, Francis, and Francis' mother survived a tornado which destroyed the family farm northeast of Boone. A few years later, she and Francis moved to the rebuilt family place which they farmed for over 40 years and where they raised four children, Paul, Lowell, Daryl, and Sharon. After Francis' death in 1995 Marcene continued to live on the Century Farm, moving to a Westhaven apartment in 2008. On the farm Marcene and Francis grew corn, soybeans, oats and alfalfa and raised cattle, pigs, chickens and ducks. In addition to livestock for slaughter, they sold milk and eggs. From a large garden, Marcene canned, and in later years froze, peas, green beans, corn, cherries and red raspberries. She made jams, jellies and pickles. An excellent cook, Marcene could just as easily prepare a large meal for corn shelling and threshing crews as make a sandwich for a grandkid fresh off the school bus. Pie was a specialty, as was angel food cake, and there were always cookies. But Marcene's greatest kitchen achievement was her cinnamon rolls made from scratch by memory. Light, moist, chewy and flavored with sugar, butter and just the right amount of cinnamon, the day-long process of making them meant they were only for special occasions, of which there were many. For her 95th birthday celebration, Marcene supervised the making of three batches of rolls. She demonstrated to family how to test the water temperature with a finger and, rising from her wheelchair, she showed how to knead the dough until it felt just right. For recreation, Marcene liked to sew, read, watch birds, and grow flowers. She also liked to travel, visiting family and friends; she particularly enjoyed stays in the Amish country of Holmes County, Ohio. In what began as a gag gift, Marcene acquired a large collection of novelty socks: socks with kittens, puppies, rabbits, chickens, cardinals (her favorite bird), bluebirds, flowers and orchids, socks for every season and holiday; she delighted wearing and showing them off. Marcene was preceded in death by Francis, her parents, her sister Joyce (Braklow) Smith, and all of her many first cousins. She is survived by son Paul (Nora) of Cleveland, Ohio, son Lowell (Mary) of Bettendorf, Iowa, son Daryl (Darlene) of Boone, Iowa, and daughter Sharon (Richard) Carlson of Decatur, Illinois. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four nieces, and many other relatives and friends.
