The child's neck was broken and her chest was crushed. Death was instantaneous. The accident happened at 5:30 o'clock Tuesday evening just as the workmen were leaving the job and the fatal stone was the last one that had been set in place. The Gossard child and a companion, Earl Plummer, six years old, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Plummer, were romping on a pile of boards that were stacked near the wall of the new church. The foundation of the structure has been completed only recently and the first of the stones on the wall are being set in place this week. The child tripped in her play and in falling; caught one of these stones in an effort to regain her balance. The stone had been set in place only a short time before and the baby's weight was sufficient to topple it from its resting place in the soft mortar and it fell to the ground carrying the baby with it. The stone and the child fell a distance of perhaps four feet into a trench dug along the line of the wall for the convenience of the workmen who laid the foundation and which had not been filled up when the work on the foundation was completed. The child fell with her back resting against the dirt on the outside of the trench and the stone was violently wedged between her tender body and the foundation wall of the church. The weight of the stone was estimated at five hundred pounds and the frail life was crushed out almost in the twinkling of an eye. The workmen hastened to the scene in response to the cries of the Plummer lad, but so firmly was the stone wedged in place that it required fifteen minutes of frantic digging before the stone could be lifted out and the body removed. The injuries either to the chest or the spinal column would have caused death instantly. The child's head and shoulders projected above the top of the trench and none of the features were marred in any way. The father of the child, Mert Gossasrd, is associated with John Dailey, of Tocsin, in the purchase of live stock and is widely and favorably known throughout the northern part of the county. He and his wife have the deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their terrible bereavement. Beside the parents there is one sister, Mrs. Golda Nash, whose home is in Ohio. Mrs. Nash was summoned to Tocsin Tuesday evening and arrived a few hours after the accident. The other relatives include one older brother, Brice, 15, and the following grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Gossard, of Hebron, Ohio and Mr. Daniel Lepley, of Tocsin. Mrs. Gossard has not enjoyed the best of health lately and the shock of her daughter's death brought about a dangerous collapse . She is reported better this afternoon. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at two o'clock at Tocsin and the burial will be at the Tocsin cemetery. The other details of the arrangements have not been completed.
