Alzheimer’s disease erased the memory of how impressed she was when he was on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, but it could never diminish her enjoyment of the Elvis impersonators who appeared occasionally at the Life Care Center of Longmont where she lived for the last eight years of her life. Mrs. Tow died Sunday, September 20, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. A native of Nebraska, she had lived in Colorado for almost 50 years. She was born August 5, 1920, the youngest of seven children born to Riley and Mary Ellen Bullock, in the house her father built after moving to Cozad, Nebraska, from Illinois with his family in 1918. Except for a year in Lyons, Colorado, as a child, she grew up in Cozad and attended elementary and high school there. She dropped out of high school in her sophomore year so she could work to help out at home during the Depression. Her brothers and sisters had married and lived on their own, so Inez worked at a variety of jobs, and began caring for her parents. She married Cleo R. Miller on November 16, 1940, and they lived in Cozad until 1966 when they moved to Colorado, living first in Lyons then settling in Longmont in 1975. She and Mr. Miller were married for 43 years until his death in 1983. They had one child, a son, Robert. In 1987 she married Russell N. Tow, and they were together for 14 years until Mr. Tow’s death in 2001. Mrs. Tow grew up in a household that cherished music. Her mother played the piano and the organ, and her father was an accomplished violinist though he always said he considered himself “just a good fiddler.” Like Elvis, she never had any formal musical training, but played the piano by ear all her life. Once she heard a song she could soon play it. She was fond of playing Christian hymns, and also loved all kinds of popular music. She was a devout Christian who saw the best in everyone, and opened her heart to all. She lived her beliefs, always treating others the way she wanted to be treated. To supplement her family’s income, Mrs. Tow cleaned houses for years, well into her 60s, and, invariably, her clients became her friends. Her sense of history led her to keeping scrapbooks and she maintained dozens of them on Nebraska and Colorado history, national and world events, achievements of family members, and her own special interests (which included, of course, the life of Elvis Presley). She collected cook books and recipes. Her homemade cook books, filled with meticulously handwritten recipes, were given as wedding, birthday and holiday gifts over the years. Mrs. Tow was a charming, gracious lady with twinkling blue eyes and an engaging smile; a trusted companion, a devoted wife and mother who loved to cook and care for her family and friends, enjoyed reading, music, embroidery work, her scrapbooks and Bible study. She became a resident of the Alzheimer’s unit of the Life Care Center of Longmont in July 2007. Her life and struggle with Alzheimer’s was documented by her son, Bob, in a memoir, My Mom Inez: Our Alzheimer’s Journey, which was published in September 2012. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, all her brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tow is survived by her son, Bob, of Longmont, Colorado, five nieces, a nephew, a special, longtime friend, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado, 455 Sherman St., Suite 500, Denver, CO 80203, or to the charity of your choice. A visitation and memorial service will be held at Howe Mortuary, Longmont, on Tuesday, September 29. Visitation will be from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., followed by the memorial service conducted by her son, Bob Miller. On Wednesday, September 30, there will be a visitation at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, Nebraska, at 10 a.m. followed by a graveside service at 11 a.m. and burial in the Cozad Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Howe Mortuary, Longmont.
