Description	:	Iona Meier, 99, long-time resident of Garnavillo died Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born in Read township, Clayton County, IA, on Nov 23, 1908. Iona was baptized in January 1909 and confirmed on Oct 2, 1921 in Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. On Nov. 21, 1928 she married Elmer Henning at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, where Iona was a faithful member until her death. Iona was baptized in January 1909 and confirmed on Oct 2, 1921 in Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. On Nov. 21, 1928 she married Elmer Henning at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, where Iona was a faithful member until her death. Three children were born: Adeline, Norbert and Doris (Henning) Engstrom. Her husband, Elmer, passed away Aug. 25, 1944, on their farm north of Garnavillo. On Nov. 15, 1949, she married Walter Meier at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and they continued to stay on the farm until their retirement to Garnavillo. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Henning; an infant daughter Adeline Henning, 1933; a son, Norbert Henning, 1954; her 2nd husband, Walter Meier, 1989; her parents, Henry and Louise (Wilker) Taake; one sister, Carrie Marting; two brothers, Wilbert and Leroy; and her stepmother, Johanna Taake. She is survived by her daughter Doris and her husband (Dean) from Orlando, FL.; grandson, Douglas and wife (Cathy) Engstrom, Johnston; granddaughter Debra and husband (David) Blackwood, Orlando, FL.;great-grandchildren, Sarah Engstrom, Johnston, and Emily and Warner Blackwood, Orlando, FL.; sister, Eleanora Berns, Waukon; and sister-in-law, Joy Meier, Centerville, SD; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Iona loved her church and used her many gifts and talents to support the ministry of St Pauls. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid, serving many years as treasurer and secretary. She taught Sunday School and served as the Financial Secretary of the church. When the new parsonage was built, she was asked to be on the building committee. But, her greatest joy was serving as chairman of the Flower Committee for many years, growing most of the flowers in her own garden. But perhaps her most remembered contribution was her making gallons of pickles, again mostly from her own garden, for the Brotherhood Stand at the Clayton County Fair. She loved being called the Pickle Lady. She also greatly enjoyed making crafts for the church bazaar. Iona gave many hours to 4-H clubs in the area. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years and a 4-H County Committee member for years. A testimony to her contributions was her induction into the National 4-H Clubs as an Honorary Member. Her family wishes to thank the good people of Garnavillo for helping her extend her independence and then her independent living for so long. You exemplify how "it takes a village…." not only to raise a child but also to help seniors age with dignity. From Rory's hand-delivered sandwiches to grocery deliveries from Bob, to front-door service by Idhe's to the church delivering sermon tapes for so many years, to all the extras from the Independent Living staff, to great neighbors like Don & Elaine, Garnavillo really came through for her in many ways. We are so grateful.
