Description	:	Ione Keily Baker, 95, died of COVID-19. She was born in Tappen, North Dakota in 1925, just four years before the start of the Great Depression. Despite the challenges and adversity the family faced, her growing up years were happily spent working on the family farm, attending school, and practicing her Irish-Catholic faith. Despite the challenges and adversity the family faced, her growing up years were happily spent working on the family farm, attending school, and practicing her Irish-Catholic faith. After completing high school, Ione set off for St. Alexius Hospital Nursing School in Bismarck, North Dakota. After graduating as a Registered Nurse (R.N.), Ione and her 2 roommates headed out to see the world. Their first stop was Seattle. As she said, "best laid plans are often put on hold, including this one." She met her husband Blaine and they began their life in Seattle, marrying in 1949. Her first job was at Harborview Medical Center. She remembers being there during the earthquake of 1949 and seeing the towers of St. James Cathedral almost touching. In 1950, Blaine was called into military service during the Korean War. At that time, Ione was expecting their first child. They moved to San Diego where he was stationed. While they were in San Diego, Pearl was born. They moved back to Seattle after the war and continued growing their family. Joseph, their only son, died at one-day. Bonnie, Mary, and Carol completed their family. Bonnie become sick when she was 2. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 11 and passed at age 17. Ione continued to lovingly care for her family throughout Bonnie's illness and participated in as many activities as possible. Her children attended St. John's Grade School and she was active in the Mother's Club and Girl Scouts. She attended all the kids' sporting events. The family camped and traveled extensively and spent happy times at their cabin near Cle Elum. Ione was a loving mother to all her children. Ione continued to work part-time as a nurse at Northgate Hospital and then Northwest Hospital where she worked in maternity for 33 years. After retiring in 1986, she and Blaine lived out their dream to travel the country. For almost 40 years they had a travel trailer and at every opportunity, were off to see new places, often with their trailer club. They traveled to Europe, Canada, Mexico and 48 of 50 states. After Blaine died in 1997, she continued to travel. Annual "Baker Girl Get-Away" with her 3 daughters were a highlight for her. They went to Rome, New York, Chicago, San Diego, and many other places. A memorable trip was when she traveled to Ireland with her sisters, brother, and extended family and met with their Irish relatives. Ione loved to garden and grew beautiful dahlias. She was an avid reader. She crocheted wonderful baby blankets for each of her grandchildren. Ione cooked incredible holiday meals and always made a special dinner for each of her children's birthday. Her Baked Beans and Chocolate Sheet Cake are two family favorites that were served and continued to be served at Baker family functions. In addition, she was an active member of the Greenwood Senior Center, enjoyed playing cards, and drove until she was 90. Ione was a member at St. John's Catholic Church for 60+ years. Over her many years at St. John's, she was an active member and leader of Legion of Mary, participating member of the funeral committee, led the rosary for funerals, and helped the parish in any way she could. She was a faithful servant and lived her faith each and every day. Her strong Irish-Catholic heritage was a source of pride. Her grandchildren were also a great source of pride. She was fortunate to have 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Visiting Grandma was always a highlight as she made each feel uniquely special. Playing card games, picking blueberries from her bushes, and eating her wonderful blueberry muffins is a favorite memory for them. Ione was a force. She was loved by all who knew her. Her faith helped her through life's many challenges. Her family will miss her – her incredibly kind nature – her loving heart – and her prayerful outlook on life. Heaven has a new angel! Ione is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Blaine, her daughter Bonnie, her infant son Joseph, her parents, Dan and Mary Keily, her siblings/in-laws Viola (Scott), Danile (Edward), Margaret, Eileen, Gladys, Lois, Joe. She is survived by her three daughters, Pearl (Terry), Mary (Phil), Carol (Rich); 8 grandchildren, Shawn (Carley), Paul (Cheryl), Daniel, Alyssa (Russ), Russell, Kerry (Max), Tyler, Kellen (Konrad); three great-grandchildren, Emma, Grayson, and Nora; her brother Dan and sister Rosemarie; Numerous nieces and nephews. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, a small family Mass was held on January 18th at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Seattle, followed by a Christian Burial at Holyrood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on her behalf to St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference c/o Our Lady of the Lake Church, 8900 35th Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98115.
