Description	:	Ira and Julia had another son who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. On August 15, 1862 Alvah R. Payne enlisted in the 38th Iowa Infantry Company K. He earned the rank of Private. His brother, Orrin M. Payne enlisted in the same military outfit five days later on August 20, 1862. They were both mustered in on October 6, 1862. On December 15, 1862 the Regiment left Dubuque, Iowa for St. Louis, Missouri. He earned the rank of Private. His brother, Orrin M. Payne enlisted in the same military outfit five days later on August 20, 1862. They were both mustered in on October 6, 1862. On December 15, 1862 the Regiment left Dubuque, Iowa for St. Louis, Missouri. The summer of 1863 would symbolize the Regiment's place in Iowa's Civil War History, losing more men to disease than any other regiment without ever participating in any of the great battles of the war. They came to be known as Iowa's Martyr Regiment. The men became sick with a combination of diseases: dysentery, typhoid, malaria, and poor diets lacking in fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat. If there was meat, it was usually spoiled. Orrin was hospitalized on a hospital steamer called "R.C. Wood" on August 13, 1863 and he died on the steamer on August 23, 1863. Alvah was moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and hospitalized at the St. Louis Hotel which had been turned into a military hospital for Union Soldiers. Alvah died on August 22,1863. There were at least 100 men who would day in this military hospital. The deceased were buried near the hospital in unmarked graves and were re-interred after 1864 in the Chalmette National Cemetery near New Orleans. Alvah is listed in military records as unknown burial. Alvah was born in 1838 in Walpole, Haldimand, Province of Ontario, Canada. Ira Payne was a farmer and owned 40 acres of land in Section 6, Post Township, and 119 acres of land in Section 8 in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, Iowa.
