Early Settlers of Jefferson, New Hampshire by George C. Evans, 1927 Lot No. 12 in Range 10 was probably settled by Isaac Bergin (Burgin). In the War of 1812 he was stationed all or most of the time in the Portsmouth Navy Yard, where he was engaged in ship building. While hewing a log of timber, he wounded himself severely by a slip of his axe, cutting his knee badly. The cut bent his leg from the knee down at a right angle. He hewed out a wooden leg tapering the thin slavs of wood well up toward his body and placing his knee on the well padded stub. This he fastened with straps to hold it firm. Thus he walked with his foot and lower leg extending out behind. He lived to be a very old man. Isaac had a daughter, Elmira, married to William Ingerson. The first son (unnamed), married Susanna Rolf. That son and Susanna Rolf had 4 sons and 4 daughters. The sons were all prosperous farmers located in Jefferson.
