MAN DROWNS IN RESERVOIR HERE Body of Ira Cook Discovered Wednesday Morning in West Monroe A verdict of death by drowning was returned by a coroner's jury here yesterday morning upon completion of an investigation into the demise of Ira Dewitt Cook 28, employee of Union Mills whose body was found floating in a West Monroe reservoir early Wednesday morning. Circumstances surrounding the actual drowning were not determined but indications pointed to suicide. Coroner Bob Funderburk stated that evidently the drowning occurred about three days before, since the body was badly bloated and seared by acid in the reservoir water. The last time Cook was seen alive, according to testimony at the inquest, was Sunday at midnight when Cook went to the home of Hoyle Simpson in West Monroe to borrow $2. It was said that he left the Simpson home and drove off in an automobile, not to be seen alive again. Efforts to uncover persons who saw him at a later hour were to no avail. The body was discovered by Clarence Wallace and Richard Key about 5:45 o'clock Wednesday morning as they sat on the edge of the reservoir awaiting their shift at Union Mills. They notified mill officials and Sheriff Niven. Later Coroner Funderburk call for an inquest. Testimony revealed that Cook had volunteered for selective service and was scheduled to leave here for Fort Bragg on July 14. It was also said that a capias had been issued against him by Mecklenburg officials for non-support of an illegitimate child. One witness, Hershel Outen, stated that several days ago Cook, who was nick-named Red, had said, "Well, you'll read about old Red in the paper in the next 30 days. What time Uncle Sam ain't after me, the Charlotte cops are." Outen said he paid no attention to the statement since Cook was in the habit of talking as though he had no interest in life. An examination of the body revealed no signs of foul play, the coroner stated. In the dead man's pocket were his notice of 1-A classification from local board no. 1 and other personal papers but none gave any clue to the mystery surrounding his death. Serving on the coroner's jury were J. O. Jones, L. G. Elms, E. E. O'Neal, P. B. Hubbard, J. F. McManus and C. M. Shannon. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Liberty Hill Baptistchurch with Rev. J. B. Little officiating assisted by Rev. Vern Helms.Burial was in the church cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Ella Gordon Cook, with whom he lived on Fairground road, four brothers, Oscar, Harvey, Hurley and Austin Cook all of Monroe, and four sisters, Mrs. Wylie Thompson and Miss Mary Cook of Indian Trail, Mrs. Clyde Eason of Rock Hill, SC and Mrs. Fred Carter of Monroe.
