Read More	Bismarck Child Killed by Truck Ira Emory Burkhart, 4-year-old son of Raymond Burkhart, 220 South Third St., was fatally injured late Tuesday afternoon when struck by a delivery truck near the corner of Third St. and Sweet Ave., while playing with a group of children. Driver of the truck was Wilard Speaks, 19, who was released on his own recognizance pending an investigation and inquest. A coroner's jury was to be called Wednesday and the inquest will probably be conducted Thursday, according to County Coroner L. W. Larson. An autopsy was to be conducted Wednesday morning. Speaks told Chief of Police W. R. Ebeling that he was not aware his truck struck the child but remembered turning out to pass a group of children in the street. Not knowing his truck had struck the child he continued with his delivery work until brought to the police station about 5:30 p.m., Tuesday. The accident happened at about 4:45 p.m. Witnesses could offer little light as to how the child was injured, Chief of Police W. R. Ebeling said. Speaks was driving east on Sweet St. and the child was struck at about Sweet and Third. Speaks said he was driving about 20 miles per hour and did not notice at the time that the impact of the child's body against the car broke the glass from the right headlight. The child died soon after being taken to a hospital. In addition to his father, who is employed at Bob's Paint and Body works, and mother, he leaves three brothers and sisters, two younger and one older than himself. Speaks is married and has a small child of his own. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday in the Webb Funeral chapel.
