Description	:	IRA FESTUS CORNWELL was born on March 20, 1889, the sixth child of JOHN CALHOUN CORNWELL and SARA MELINDA HAFNER. He was born at home in the Baton Rouge community at the 2nd homesite of his father. Regarding schooling, Ira attended the local Baton Rouge school on the old Columbia highway and probably finished the ninth grade there. He was born at home in the Baton Rouge community at the 2nd homesite of his father. Regarding schooling, Ira attended the local Baton Rouge school on the old Columbia highway and probably finished the ninth grade there. Desiring further education, he then attended Lincoln Academy in Lincolnton, N.C. It is believed that his grandfather, John Abell Hafner, was from the Lincolnton area. His uncle, G. W. Hafner, was living in Lincolnton at this time. After finishing at Lincoln Academy, he decided to go west to northern Mississippi as so many of the previous generations from Chester County had done. There is some thought that he had a disagreement with some of his cousins resulting in some injury to his person. His recuperation from his injuries perhaps prompted his going to Mississippi. Exactly when he ventured to Mississippi is unclear but it was probably in 1911. Chester Co, SC, Courthouse land records indicate that Ira inherited appr. 130 acres from his father (Book 18,Page 57) in 1907. These courthouse real estate records also indicate that Ira sold this 130 acres in two parcels of 45.5 and 84.5 acres respectively to brothers Burris O. and John. A. Cornwell in 1911. This land sale probably provided seed money for the subsequent mercantile business in Mississippi. In Mississippi, Ira entered into the retail meat mercantile business in Louisville, Mississippi. The deed, dated 6 December 1912, was for residential property purchased by Ira Cornwell from O. A. Hanna in the McLean addition of Louisville for the sum of $1200. As is the case with young single men, Ira immersed himself in the local social life and developed many friendships in Louisville. Through these social activities, he met his future wife Lucy Araminta Carr, who was teaching first grade in the Winston Co, MS, school system. He married Lucy Araminta Carr on 27-Jan-1914. She was born 7 November 1888 and died 27 Feb 1969 in Charlotte, NC. Obituary: Ira Festus Cornwell, 62, prominent retired farmer, widely known in Masonic circles and formerly engaged in mercanitle business, died at his home in the Calvary community of western Chester county Tuesday morning following an illness of several years. Funeral services were conducted at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon from the Calvary Baptist Church of western Chester County with interment in the church cemetery. Mr. Cornwell was a native of the Baton Rouge section, a son of the late John Calhoun and Sarah Malinda Hafner Cornwell. He was educated at the Lenoir Rhyne college at Hickory, NC. Mr. Cornwell was a former member of the Leeds school board and had served for many years as a member of the board of equalization for Chester County. Mr. Cornwell was a Mason and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He served served many years as magistrate of the Hallesville Township, Early in life he engaged in the mercantile business at Louisville, Miss. Survivors include his widow, the former Lucy Carr of Louisville, Miss; four sons, Dr. James Ira Cornwell of Asheville; Hafner Lucius Cornwell of Leeds; Wallace Wilbert Cornwell of Chester; and Julian Carr Cornwell, a student at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn, Ala; a daughter, Katy Elinor Cornwell of Charlotte, NC; several grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Cornwell of Birmingham, Ala. and Leeds, and Mrs. W. P. Estes of Leeds and two brothers, Burroughs Octavius Cornwell and Clyde W. Cornwell, both of Leeds.
