He came to Newton in 1865 [see note below] with his parents, Samuel C. and Martha A Fugard, and has been a resident of Jasper county since that time. For the last 20 years he has lived in Newton. On March 24, 1881 he was united in marriage with Annie R. Allum of Graysville, Pa. To this union four children were born: Mrs. Guy Wilson of Buffalo Lake, Minn., Mrs. Earl Smith of Des Moines and Mrs. Jack Farmer of Newton. A daughter, Dolly, died in infancy. He is survived beside his widow and children by one brother, Frank E. Fugard, of Birmingham, Ala. During his life in Newton, Mr. Fugard became extremely well known in the city. He spent his life here as a nurseryman and raised an exceptional grade of strawberries which were known throughout this section of the state. He took an active part in the life of the city and was known as being behind any movement which held out a promise of betterment for the community. During the 60 years he spent in Jasper county he acquired a wide circle of friends and acquaintances and was favorably known in all sections of the county.
