Born of revolutionary ancestry he inherited many of the sterling qualities of these early pioneers, which enabled him to endure his afflictions so patiently all through the long years. He was educated in the country schools of Pennsylvania, later attended Wilkes-Barre and Kingston universities. After completing his education he devoted 18 years of his life to school work in Pennsylvania and Iowa, later moving to a farm in Iowa, where he continued to take an active interest in educational work and all other progressive movements. At the age of 24 he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, with which he was affiliated at the time of his death. March 13, 1876, he was united in marriage to Martha Edinger, of Laceyville, Pennsylvania, and to this union were born eight children, who with his wife and 19 grandchildren survive him. Mrs. C. F. Greene, of Auburn, Washington; Mrs. L. E. Mehlmann, of North Platte, Nebraska; Mrs. A. C. Buboltz, and Mrs. Charles L. Bagshaw, of Massena, Iowa; Mrs. C. W. Hogan, of Greenfield, Iowa; Mrs. A. G. Wylie, D. W., and O. I. Barrowcliff, of Bridgewater, Iowa, were at his bedside at the time of his death. His hours of recreation were spent among his flowers, his music, and his books. Though gone to his eternal rest in peace his spirit shall live through the work done and the things accomplished. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning, at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. M. B. Wilson, pastor of the M. E. church of Bridgewater. A mixed quartette rendered "Lead Kindly Light," "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "Abide with Me," all favorite hymns of the deceased, and Miss Hazel Chapman, with her beautiful voice, comforted all who mourn as she sang "Face to Face." Interment was made in Victoria Center cemetery. Messrs. Thomas Bell, Orville Abbey, Robert Bagshaw, Ed Dixon, Robert Wyllie, and William Kembery acting as pallbearers. Barrowcliff, one of the old pioneer instructors of his vicinity, passed away August 12, at his home near Bridgewater, aged 80 years, 2 months, and 17 days. The funeral was held the following Tuesday at his home, conducted by Rev. M. B. Wilson, and interment was made in Victoria Center cemetery. He was born in Bradford County, Pennsylvania on May 26, 1843 where he grew to manhood, and where he attended the country school, later attending Wilkes-Barre and Kingston Universities. After completing his education, he devoted eighteen years to teaching in his native state and later in Iowa. He then removed to a farm still taking an active part in educational work and other progressive movements. At the age of 24 he united with the M. E. Church with which he was affiliated at the time of his death. He was married to Martha Edinger of Laceyville, Pennsylvania on March 13, 1876 and to them eight children were born, who with the wife and mother and nineteen grandchildren survive him. The children are Mrs. C. F. Green of Auburn, Washington; Mrs. L. E. Mehlman of North Platte, Nebraska; Mrs. A. C. Buboltz and Mrs. C. L. Bagshaw of Massena; Mrs. C. W. Hogan of Greenfield; and Mrs. A. G. Wyllie, D. W. Barrowcliff, and A. I. Barrowcliff all being at his bedside at the time of his death. Deceased was a great lover of flowers and his hours of recreation was spent among them and nothing pleased the elderly gentleman more than for his friends to share them with him.
