Description	:	Ira L. "Ben" Gilbert, 80, a resident of Burlington, passed away at his home on Friday, May 1, 2009. He was born on December 19, 1928 in Leonard, North Dakota, one of 14 children of Ira A. & Alice (Kimberling) Gilbert. In 1937 Ben moved with his family to the Edison area where he was raised and attended school. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country during WW II. "Ben" Gilbert, 80, a resident of Burlington, passed away at his home on Friday, May 1, 2009. He was born on December 19, 1928 in Leonard, North Dakota, one of 14 children of Ira A. & Alice (Kimberling) Gilbert. In 1937 Ben moved with his family to the Edison area where he was raised and attended school. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country during WW II. Ben was first married to Sylvia Logan and from that marriage his son, Vinny was born. He later married Margaret Cope and with her his sons Gary & Thomas were born. On March 5, 1966 he finally married the love of his life, Ellen Thomas and together they had seven children. Ben worked in the timber industry for many years, logging and driving log trucks. He also worked as a night guard for Crown Pacific, worked in construction for Snelson's and also as a milker for several dairies in the Skagit Valley. Ben enjoyed building things out of wood, taking care of his family and his animals. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ellen at the family home in Burlington. His children, David and his companion Renea of Spokane, WA, Danny and his wife Tenna of Mount Vernon, Gloria Gilbert of Burlington, Phyllis Gilbert of Mount Vernon and Peggie "Tiny" Gilbert of Anacortes. He had fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis Gilbert; a daughter, Glenice Gilbert; his seven brothers and six sisters. Graveside inurnment services with Military Honors for Ben will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Bow Cemetery.
