Description	:	His name was Ira Oda Roberds. He was usually called Oda or Odie. Oda was a softspoken, mellow gentleman. He laughed a lot and visited us several times a week. He helped me with my chores and helped mom with work around the house, repairs etc. He repaired all of our shoes and had a regular cobbler set-up. He helped me with my chores and helped mom with work around the house, repairs etc. He repaired all of our shoes and had a regular cobbler set-up. When I was a preschool child, they lived in Kansas City, MO, at some kind of boys home. Gramma worked there and Grampa worked in a (strip pit) coal mine. They moved to California in 1942 to work in the shipyards. Gramma typed in the office. She was very proud of her typing skill. Her sister, Kate, became a riveter. I think Grampa and Daddy were welders. After the war they moved to Orland to be near Clifford. They lived upstairs in the big Hatchery House on Chapman Street. Then they bought a house over near Hiway 32. Grampa worked for Macy's Lumber Yard until his final surgery. He was active in the Orland Baptist Church until Clifford started going to Chico to the Southern Baptist Church. Then we all joined First Avenue Baptist Church in Chico (Later, Esplande Baptist). Grampa loved to read and fish. He was a member of a book club. After he died I read most of his books. They were classics by Steinbeck, Hemingway etc. He also was very pleased with his new Ford purchased in 1949 or 50. He rode his bicycle most of the time in Orland--especially if it rained, because he didn't want to get his new car wet. Grampa and I went bicycling all over the south and east part of town. Often he would fix us a snack of fried hominey. We were very close. When he was dying, I always went straight to his house after school to read to him or visit or feed him frozen orange juice. I always stayed with him until my Dad relieved me after he finished work and had had supper. I usually ate and went to bed by the time I got home, but I wouldn't have missed being with him during those times for anything. I did my homework and discussed it with him. He was always very interested in everything I did. I knew I was his favorite grandchild. I loved him and still (over 50 years later) occasionally dream about him.
