Son of John William Sams and Elizabeth Black OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, January 22, 1948 IRA SAMS Ira Sams, son of John and Elizabeth Sams, was born in Warren county, November 18, 1873, and passed away following an operation at the Yocom hospital January 12, 1948, at the age of 74 years, one month and 26 days. On September 6, 1896, he was united in marriage to Orpha Masterson. To this union two sons were born, One son, Walter, passed away in 1916. For many years he was a member of the United Brethren church at Bethel. The family mourn the loss of a true and faithful husband and father. He is survived by his widow, one son, Raymond and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, Milton Ira Sams and Elizabeth Orpha Sams, five brothers, Will and Everett Sams of Indianola; Arch Sams of Des Moines; Elmer Sams of Pleasantville; Jim Sams of Rush, Colo., three sisters, Mrs. D. J. Reynolds of Montana; Mrs. Frank Davis of Melcher and Mrs. Elva Bassett of Des Moines, a host of nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. William Peters of the Baptist church were held Friday, January 16 at 2 o'clock, at the Beardsley funeral home. Burial was made in the Bethel cemetery. Music was furnished by Mr. Don Sanders, Mrs. Alec Wallace, Harold Hunerdosse and Glenn Hayes. Casket bearers were Cliff Rasmus, Earl Whittlesey, Arthur Gookin, Carl Goltry, Lloyd Thompson and Donald Smith. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
