Son of Abraham Lincoln "Link" Arnold and Anna Bond OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 16, 1924 IRA THOMAS ARNOLD Ira Thomas Arnold was born in Lucas county, Iowa, on April 11, 1893, and passed away at his home near Norwood, on October 13, 1924, at the age of 31 years, 6 months and 2 days. He united with the M. E. church at the age of fourteen years, and lived a steadfast Christian life to the end. He was married on December 24, 1916, to Miss Grace Shupe. To this union three children were born, two of whom, Thomas Jr., aged 5 years, and Robert James, aged 3 years, are left with the wife and mother to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. He is also survived by his father, A. L. Arnold, and by two sisters, Mrs. Otis Niswender, Mrs. Deo Mills, and by two brothers, Bruce and Harold, all of whom were with him in his last sickness since his return from Colorado to the home some months ago. His life, so short, has touched many with helpfulness. His death has saddened all. In 1906, when Thomas was thirteen years of age, his happy childhood home was shadowed by the death of his mother, and circumstances placed many heavy responsibilities on Tommy. A younger sister, Hazel, and brother, Harold, became his special pride and care. The judgement he used, the sacrifices he made for them, for his father and the home were often remarked on by neighbors and friends. He took special training in a business college in Burlington, and spent eight years teaching in Lucas county and in Colorado and showed more than ordinary ability in this line. But where he best expressed himself, perhaps, was in his musical talent, which he used in the church, in the Sunday school, in the social life of the community and in the home. He selected the songs sung at his funeral and from them we get the message he would leave.
