Son of William Williby and Isabell Boylan THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, December 26, 1912 IRA WILLIBY KILLED Former Chariton Man Met Death in Des Moines Tuesday's Register and Leader contained the following account of the shooting of Ira Williby in Des Moines; "Ira W. Williby, a contractor residing in Summit, S. D., was shot through the heart and killed last night at 9:30 o'clock by a man whose identity has not been fully established. The police are searching for a street peddler, known by the name "Dago Nick," who was seen talking with Williby a short time before the shooting. Though two patrolmen and two detectives were detailed on a search for the slayer immediately after Williby's lifeless body was found at Southwest Second street and Livingston avenue by John Goodwin, a negro living at that corner, up until an early hour this morning their efforts have been futile. Upon John Goodwin, the aged negro who was the first to reach Williby's body, the police are depending for almost all of their information, and the scant array of facts that Goodwin is able to furnish the officials and Coroner James Lee leaves the shooting somewhat of a mystery. The murderer, standing a short distance away from Williby's body, turned the weapon upon Goodwin as he opened his door and fired a second time. That two shots were fired there is no doubt, the statements made by all persons who were within earshot of the scene of the tragedy being united in this regard. Goodwin's assertion that Williby fell to the ground after the first shot was fired was reinforced by a similar statement from Miss Edna McMillan, a girl whose home is but a few yards from Second street and Livingston avenue. The aged negro's declaration that the slayer shot at him is given safe credence by the police. An examination of the dead man's body showed that there was but one bullet wound, that over the heart. The murder was the result of a quarrel if Goodwin's story of the affair is true. Goodwin says that he was returning to his home from his work at the Italian Importing Company's grocery, 300 Southwest Fourth street, and that with him was another employee of the grocery firm. When he passed by the intersection he noticed two men, one of whom he recognized as "Dago Nick," standing in the middle of the road talking excitedly and quarreling, though over what he was unable to make out." Ira Williby was raised in Chariton and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Williby and brothers, Billy and Grant, reside here. Ira worked at the blacksmith trade here and was employed by the Johnson Bros. foundry a short time last summer. He conducted a shop on the east side of Des Moines for several years, the family going from there to Montana. Not long since they returned to Des Moines, though he was not living with his wife. They have several children. The deceased was perhaps 45 years of age. His remains were brought here for burial Tuesday evening.
