She died Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at Heritage of Bel Air in Norfolk. --- Irene was born on Sept. 26, 1923, to Art and Minna (Kaul) Gronau at Sisseton, S.D. She was baptized in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church at Sisseton. At two years of age, her family moved to Elgin. She attended grade schools in Antelope County, Madison County District 40 and Green Garden Lutheran Day School. Irene was confirmed in 1937 at St. John Lutheran Church Green Garden in Madison. She attended Newman Grove High School her freshman and sophomore years. Her junior year was at Battle Creek High School. She graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1941. Irene married Francis “Fiki” Zimmerman on June 21, 1942. During World War II, Fiki and Irene moved to Portland, Ore., to build warships. The remainder of their lives was spent living in Battle Creek. Irene was involved in the following organizations: St. John Dorcas Society, St. John Altar Guild and Battle Creek Improvement Club. She was a 4-H leader and on the Battle Creek Betterment Council. Her passion was the “Parks of Pride” and Friends of the Park. Irene was on the Steering Committee for the new junior/senior high school. The Zimmerman family sponsored AFS Foreign Exchange Students: Nongnart (Pia) Niamsiri from Thailand, Farouq Abawi from Afghanistan, Ediberto (Pipo) Buencamino from Philippines and Kaori Niaomi from Japan. Pia and Pipo (and Pipo’s spouse Lorie) are now American citizens. The last years of her life, Irene lived at Homestead and Heritage of Bel-Air. Irene is survived by children, Sharon (Bob) Swanson of LaPorte, Ind., Victoria Ashker, Jane (Loren) Brandstetter of Battle Creek and Bruce (Connie) Zimmerman of Pierce; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Minna Gronau, Chas and Irene (Winter) Zimmerman; her spouse, Francis “Fiki” Zimmerman; sister and brother-in-law Laura and Charles Roper; brother and sister-in-law Victor and Marc Gronau; and son and daughter-in-law Francis Charles and Diane Zimmerman.
