The deceased maiden name was Irene Damon and she was born in East Concord, New York on April 7th 1846 where she grew to young womanhood. On April 7th 1863, she was united in marriage to Mr. Abel Davis and some little time later she and husband came to Delaware county where they resided for some little time or until the death of Mr. Davis. She since that time made her home with her children and for the past nine years with her daughter, Mrs. Booth of this city. Mrs. Davis' father was a Baptist preacher and came to Quasqueton sometime after his daughter moved there and preached in that place for seven years. The deceased is survived by seven children, among them being Mrs. Fred Booth of this city. In her younger days she was a member of the Baptist church but on coming to Emmetsburg, there being no church of her denomination here she united with the Methodist church. She was a woman of strong character, and when she was able, a faithful attendan on the means of Grace. She was kindly in disposition and ever stood ready to aid in every neighborly act of kindnesses. The family have the sympathy of the community in their sorrow. Palo Alto Reporter, March 4, 1920 Note 1: FindAGrave contributor Nancy Hicks indicates that the maiden name recorded in this obituary is in error and that Mrs. Davis was the daughter of Jeremiah and Laura Wood. The 1855 census for Concord Township, Erie County, N.Y., lists an Irene Damon as a daughter, age 9, in the household of Barnard and Lucy Damon. The 1865 census for the same township lists an Irene Davis, 17, as the wife of Abel Davis, age 30. The age 17 may have been an error in transcription since the age in the online version of the original record looks as much like 19 as 17. Not clear if they are the same person. Irene's gravestone indicates she was born in 1846 and Abel in 1835. Note 2: Birth name in obituary confirmed by McCauley-Mitchell who has family records that include an obituary for Amelia's father, Bernard Damon, listing his daughter Amelia as a survivor.
