Read More	LIFE ON THE HOMESTEAD Irene's parents, Iver and Annine (Anna) Wang, were married in Downing, WI in 1877. The decision to move westward came as the result of urgings from Mr. Wang’s boyhood friends. Traveling by steamboat, train, and stagecoach, the six children and two adults moved from Wisconsin to WA around 1900. At some point, Alfred, age about 1 or 2, threw his only pair of shoes out the window. To escape an epidemic of scarlet fever in Portland, Iver moved the family up the Columbia River where they landed at the Bingen boat landing. In 1901, while living somewhere on Jewett Creek, Iver Wang heard of land being given away in Trout Lake under the Homestead Act. He walked several miles to the property in order to survey the land and find a suitable homestead site. Iver and several other men soon journeyed to Goldendale to file for their chosen land. It is believed that Mr. Wang filed for 160 acres. Today, the document granting the land to Iver Wang and signed by President Theodore Roosevelt is treasured by his great-grandchildren. Soon the new home was built and ready for the Wang family. At first it was a one-room log cabin, but there were additions later. Split cedar was used as flooring to protect the family against the cold winters. All the children walked the three miles to school and back. Preservation for the food for the family was necessary and inventive. Eggs were stored for future use by placing them in layers in a barrel of oats until the barrel was full. The point of the egg was placed downward so that the yolk would not go to the bottom and rot the egg. Every two weeks the barrel would be completely turned over. A five-mile wooden flume was built to bring water to their house and provide storage for their milk and butter. Grandma Anna Wang used a spinning wheel to make cloth. Six of their eight children were born on the farm in Wisconsin: Bertha, Cora, Palmer, Jessie, Julius, Alfred. Two more (Ruby and Irene) were born at the Trout Lake homestead. The youngest, baby Ivan, lived only five days and was buried on somewhere on the property by his father. Irene Wang married O.N. Wilberg on April 8, 1928 in Skamania County, WA. After his death she married Ernest Begin. They lived in Alaska where Irene became the Postmistress of Aniak, AK.
