Read More	A PIONEER PASSES Mrs. John Stewart, of Penhold, Dead Mrs. John Stewart, of Penhold , the oldest surviving pioneer of the Red Deer district, at at Banff on Sunday from the effects of a second stroke of paralysis at the age of sixty-one. Mrs. Stewart was attended in her last illness by one of her daughters, a trained nurse, and the family had all been to her bedside only a few days ago, when her condition became more serious. It was not expected that she would survive the stroke very long. Mrs. Stewart was one of the notable figures of the district and she passed through many pioneer experiences during the past twenty years. The Stewarts came in 18?? from London, Ont. Mr. Stewart had earlier in the year gone on to Red Deer with Rev. Dr. Gaetz and came back to Calgary to get his wife and children when they arrived. The floods had washed away part of the bridge, and the Hon. W. H. Cushing, then as now the friend of the new comer, assisted in getting them across the river on the stringers of the bridge. Their first stopping place in this district was at the Catholic mission on ..., and a pretty rainy time they had of it. They stopped for the most of the summer of 1881 in the substantial log houses at the Red Deer Crossing, which they divided with the McLellans. It was a memorable and anxious evening when the word came by courier in to the spring of 1885 that [natives] were rising and the settlers would have to seek shelter in Calgary. Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. McLellan baked at night and at daybreak, the party set out for Calgary, Rev. Dr. Gaetz in charge, where the women and children remained for 3 months. Mr. Stewart then took up land seven or eight miles south of Red Deer Crossing and east of Penhold, and here the family remained up to a few years ago, when they moved in to the village. Mr. Stewart died 7 years ago. Mrs. Stewart's was one of the centres of hospitality in those early days, especially for the young people, as she had an organ. The life was often lonely and hard, but the friendship and comradeship of the early pioneers as Mrs. Stewart said "was some of the most beautiful and touching things I have known, and the country itself has simply repaid all who came to it trying to make it a home." Mrs. Stewart's friendship to her neighbors reveals, perhaps more than anything else, her own kindly disposition and character. Mrs. Stewart's health improved greatly in Alberta, and she was in good health up to this summer, when she had a first slight stroke. The family consists of two sons and four daughters. Stewart was called suddenly to Banff last Thursday owing to the serious illness of her mother who had a slight stroke some time ago and was recuperating at the mountain resort. Red Deer News, December 16, 1908, page 6 The funeral service yesterday afternoon over the remains of the late Mrs. Stewart, of Penhold, took place in the Presbyterian church, and was attended by a large number of friends and sorrowing relatives, both from Penhold and Red Deer. Revs. Simpson, of Penhold, and Brown, of Red Deer, conducted the solemn service. Mrs. Stewart was a true friend to all who knew her, and those who knew her, and those who knew her longest loved her most. Several beautiful wreaths were given by children and friends.
