Irene Lillian Mickel was born May 4, 1921 at Linton, ND, the daughter of Archie and Sadie (Peterson) Mickel. Irene was born into a pioneer family, homesteading in Emmons County, ND. Her youth was spent riding horse back, and never having a motor vehicle. She then moved into Linton to attend and graduate from high school there. During World War II, she left her horse behind and went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, WA, to build airplanes. During the war, her brother Eugene Mickel suggested she write his best buddy, Martin Maruska. After four years of correspondences, they met when he returned at the war’s end. Martin and Irene married November 3, 1945 at Bismarck, ND. Martin and Irene moved to Alice, where they operated Maruska Texaco Station and Repair Shop for nearly 40 years. Martin died January 17, 1989. After Martin’s death, Irene moved to Enderlin and later to Lisbon. She later became a resident of the Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo. Irene is survived by one son, Eugene (Kathy) Maruska, Fargo; one daughter, Ellen (Denis) Gross, Enderlin; three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Irene was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Mark and Craig Maruska; her parents; two brothers, and one sister. Funeral arrangements are with the Lerud-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City.
