She was born in West Hawley, June 19,1917, the daughter of Ambrose and Ellen (Martin) Lanoue, the youngest of 9 children. Read More	______________________________________________________ Obituary -- Published in the Greenfield Recorder on September 10,2012: Irene (Lanoue) Lively, 95, of 3325 Shelburne Falls Road, Conway, died Saturday, Sept. 8, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton surrounded by her family. She was born in West Hawley, June 19,1917, the daughter of Ambrose and Ellen (Martin) Lanoue, the youngest of 9 children. She grew up in West Hawley attending the one-room Bozrah School and graduating from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls in 1935. After graduation she took the train to North Adams to study hairdressing and upon completion of her studies she opened her own beauty shop in Charlemont. On October 23, 1937, Irene married Ernest Lively at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shelburne Falls. Their first home was in Charlemont before moving to Buckland and eventually to their family home on Shelburne Falls Road in Conway for the rest of their married life. Prior to her retirement in 1980 she was the librarian and a teacher's aide at Buckland/Shelburne Elementary School. Previously she was employed at the former Kendall Mills in Griswoldville. Irene had also been a master gardener for the Bridge of Flowers. She was a devout member of St. Joseph Church and active in many fund-raising events for various parish projects. Irene could be called upon to organize and oversee projects from beginning to end. For years the altar was beautifully decorated with the many flowers from her gardens. Her rosary was a close friend and her prayer book was stuffed with many prayer cards and reminders of God's love and mercy. Receiving Holy Communion was always the highlight of her day. Irene had many interests: she was a fierce cribbage player, an avid reader, a lover of beauty whether it was her flowers, the Pioneer Valley Symphone, Tanglewood and nature's change of seasons. She yearned to be busy and was known for her creative hand-made centerpieces and decorations for special occasions. Many people who are served at Community Meals or by Meals on Wheels have been gifted with Irene's lovely table favors. One of her proudest accomplishments was learning to knit at the age of 95. To her surprise and delight, Irene received more than 200 birthday cards on her 95th birthday in June. Survivors include her daughters Roseanne Emond of Turners Falls, Mary Johnson with whom she lived, Bonnie (Roger) Phillips of Colrain; her sons Ernest (Lois) Lively of Erving, Arthur "Bud" (Judy) Lively of Conway; John Lively of Tucson,AZ; 12 grandchildren Leslie Campbell of Turners Falls, Lindsey Burt of Northfield, William Gallant of Greenfield, Ramona Mayo of Rineyville,KY, Travis Lively of San Diego,CA, Deven Lively of Glasgow,VA, Jamie Lively of Hammond,LA, Jennifer Ashmore of Rockwell,TX, Peter Eldridge of Coppell,TX, Johnny Lively of Tucson,AZ, Linwood Phillips of Springfield,MA, Brianna Phillips of Oakridge,TN; 17 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her very beloved companions AnnaMary and Lacey. She was predeceased by her husband and her daughters Bethany Eldridge and Irene Michaud. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Sept, 12, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 34 Monroe Ave., Shelburne Falls. Burial will be in West Branch Cemetery, Colrain. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home in Shelburne Falls. It is suggested donations be made to the Conway Ambulance Association, Main Street, Conway, MA 01341.
