Irene Melva Goodwin, 94, of Le Mars, formerly of Sioux City, passed away on Nov. 7, 2014 at a Le Mars hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Whitfield United Methodist Church, 1319 West Fifth Street, in Sioux City, with the Rev. Liz Tucker officiating. Burial of the ashes will be in Quimby Cemetery, Quimby, Iowa. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Wesley was born on April 18, 1917, in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Claude Leroy Goodwin and Olive Ann (Scott) Goodwin. He was raised in Ida Grove. He entered the military in 1942 and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. Irene was born on April 24, 1920, in Quimby, the daughter of Albert George and Elsie Ida (Heyer) Stoneking. She was raised in Quimby and graduated from Quimby High School in 1939. On Jan. 31, 1942, Wesley married Irene Melva Stoneking in South Sioux City. After their marriage, the couple lived in Cherokee, Iowa, Bay City, Mich., and Quimby, before moving to Sioux City in 1951. Wesley was a truck driver and a certified bridge and tower welder. He was also an adult education welding instructor. He worked for numerous companies including Casewell Manufacturing, Graham Brake, Missouri Valley Steel, and Advance Industries. He retired 30 years ago. Irene worked at Younker-Martins Department Store, as secretary of Whitfield United Methodist Church, and as a cook at Holy Spirit Retirement Home and in the Sioux City School System. She retired 26 years ago. Irene was very active at Whitfield Church, serving as president of United Methodist Women, and holding offices in many organizations. Irene and her daughter, Ann, sang together with the Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and helping others with crafting. Irene was a member of Siouxland Crafters, and the Siouxland Senior Center. Wesley was active in the C.B. Club, the Leisure Living Campers Club and the Siouxland Senior Center. He was an accomplished woodcarver. The couple moved to Le Mars in 2008. Wes and Irene are survived by their son, Gary and his wife, Pam of Westminster, Colo.; their grandchildren, Scott (Kim) Goodwin, John (Tracy) Goodwin, Russell (Junko) Goodwin, Charlotte (Ted) Saliers, Derik Lampe, Michelle (Shane) Jasper, and Chad (Melissa) Lampe; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kelsey, Elise, Miku, Ayana, Joey, Grace, Noel, Layne, Madison, Whitney, Carter; and a great-great-granddaughter, Waverly. The couple were preceded in death by their parents; a daughter and her husband, Ann and Donald Plate; Wesley’s brothers, Fred, Howard, and Chester; and his sister, Estella Russell.
