Smith passed away at 6:15 Saturday morning at his home in St. John, after an illness of only a week with heart trouble and other complications. Until taken ill he had been in his usual health. His sickness was violent from the first and his children and other members of his family were notified of the acuteness of his condition, and were with him when the end came. For forty-one years Mr. Smith and his wife have been residents of Stafford county. He was a farmer of the Radium community, moving to St. John a few years ago when his health would not permit continued active work on the farm. The funeral sevice was held at the Methodist church in St. John at 2:30 Monday afternoon, conducted by Elder Tom Coats of Stafford. The pall bearers were Geo. Blake, Wiley Risley, Curt Adams, Walter Hickman, John Davis, and E. E. Warner. Those in charge of flowers were: Mrs. John Davis, Mrs. Curt Adams, Mrs. Walter Hickman, and Mrs. E. E. Warner. The singers were from the Pratt Church of Christ. Following is the obituary read at the funeral: Irvin M. Smith, son of Charles G. and Lydia Smith, was born in Jacksonville, Ill., June 4, 1859. He was one of a family of nine brothers and five sisters, of whom four brothers and one sister survive - John and Dave of Westcliff, Colorado; Ed and Clint of East Von, New Mexico, and Laura Ringo, St. Joseph, Mo. At the the age of five years, he moved with his parents to Missouri, where he made his home until he was 18 years old. He then moved to Chase county, Kansas, where, in 1882, he was united in marriage with Carey L. Bookstore at Cottonwood Falls. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. One daughter, Winona Rebecka, left this life at the age of 10 months. Otherwise the family circle has been unbroken, until the passing of the father. The children remaining with the mother to mourn the loss of father and life companion are: Oscar Charles Smith of St. John; Clara May Talley of Pratt, Lydia D. Steinman of Stafford, Guy M. and Clinton B. Smith of Seward, and Edna Alberta Davis of St. John. Eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren also mourn the loss of grandfather. Brother Smith obeyed the Gospel thirty years ago during a tent meeting, which was held by Brother Crenshaw on the farm of Brother Smith. At the time of his death, he was a member of the St. John Church of Christ. Brother Smith moved with his family to Stafford county March 10, 1891 , where he resided until his death. During the past four years his health has been failing, but his usual health prevailed until October 7, when he took to his bed for the last time, passing this life at 6:15 a.m., Saturday, October 15, at the age of 73 years four months and eleven days.
