The Marion Sentinel Thursday May 6, 1943 Irving Eugene Isham, a life-long resident of Linn county, died Saturday, May 1, at 9:45 p.m. at his home of the Alburnett road, a mile northwest of Marion, following a long illness. Mr. Isham was born at Waubeek on August 26, 1872, the son of Walter M. and Rebecca Jane Patterson Isham. He was first married to Minnie Wagor at Anamosa. She died Dec. 14, 1918, at Marion. His second marriage was with Faye Boyer at Central City on January 31, 1929, who survives. He leaves no children, but Lillian Norris Dowdle, of Chicago, was reared from childhood under his care. Brothers and sisters surviving are Mrs. Florence Burlingham of Central City; Mrs. Sarah Slife, Clinton; Henry Isham, Perry, Okla.; Mrs. Harriet Launsberry, Ames; Lynn Isham, of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Lois Ryder, of Des Moines. A sister, Mrs. Elizaabeth Lauber, and a brother, Ralph preceded him in death. Gene, as he was universally know, was in business in Central City in his earlier years, but in 1908 he was appointed steward of the Linn county hom, and continued to hold that position through changing administrations until he resigned in 1937, because of failing years. It was said that in all his 29 years as steward he was only away from home over-night once. During these many years he was able to render a great service to both the county and the many persons in his charge who needed comfort and care. No more generally popular man ever trod the streets of Marion. Largely attended funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Jordans Grove Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. Ira E. Edwards, present pastor and the Rev. Ernest C. Allen, of Conrad, a former, in charge. Burial was in the Jordans Grove cemetery.
