Issac Asselstine 1777-1860 (June 25) Isaac Asselstine was born in April 1777 in Hillsdale, New York State. The son of John Asselstine and Catherine Cole. #1- Isaac arrived in what was known as Upper Canada and some other families. They had crossed the eastern end of Lake Ontario in an open boat just before 1800. Isaac was 21 years of age and his mother was apparently looking for her husband, John Asselstine Sr, who had come to Lower Canada with regiment called the Jessup Rangers in about 1782 and was stationed at Sorel Quebec, for a period of time. While at Sorel he was under the impression that something had happened to his wife and family and he married a French lady, Marie Langlois. John Asselstine came to Upper Canada when the U.E.L.'s came to Kingston from Sorel and settled in Ernestown Township. Issac being the son of a Loyalist, he was allowed to draw for land. In the the Public Archives of Canada, Colonial Office Records, Canada Office Records , Q series, Vol. 298, pt.2, pg. 460. This document is dated March 9th 1803 and asked the committee to take into consideration that he was the son of John Asselstine, a U.E.L. of Ernestown.(ship) Praying for lands. Recommended for two hundred acres of land as a son of a U.E.L. Loyalist. He drew land in King Township, lot #4, concession No. 9. From the Newmarket, Ontario Registar's Office Abstract Index records show " Patent dated Feb. 16 1804 Crown Land to Isaac Asselstine 200 acres. This was too far to go into the wilderness, so he sold it and took up land in the Township of Fredericksburgh on the shores of Hay Bay. Issac married Mar Barbara Fralick who's father was Jacob Fralick and he purchased 48.5 acres from James Forshee in 1811. Isaac Asselstine purchased this 48.5 acres 1818. In 1824 William Smith sold to Isaac Asselstine 95 acres and in 1836, James Forshee deeded Nicholas Asselstine 50 acres. Nicholas is Isaac's oldest son. Over the years, from the time Isaac first settled on part of this land, he and his son Nicholas, kept acquiring more land. This property totalling nearly 600 acres which consisted of all Lot C.C. 14 and 15 in North and South Frederickburgh. When Issac married, he and his bride went at once to the new log house he had built. The house was minus a door while his wife Barbara, went to the bush and cut a stick and made a splint broom. She had learned how from the squaws in the neighbourhood. They took their meals on a black chest until Isaac could make a table. He was very clever and made chairs with splint or bark seats in them which remained in the family for two generations. He made wooden bowls from the knots of trees. The old black chest is still in the family with one of his great granddaughters. Isaac and Mary Barbara Fralic had eight children. Their children were: Jacob, baptised 4-21-1805, married Hannah Benn Katy, baptised 11-7-1809, married Florenz Benn Nicholas, baptised 8-6-1807 (twice) Benjamin, baptised 3-23-1812, married Charlotte Huffman Cyril married Alice Clark Anne married John Anderson William C. born Jan. 8, 1820, married Catharine Moore Elizabeth died at the age of 7, Nov. 26, 1830 Isaac did his first work on the land by chopping down the heavy timber and clearing ten acres. He sowed a piece of flax, to spin linen, for in those days, nearly all they had or wore were was handmade. He planted potatoes and sowed some wheat. the Bay afforded lots of wild ducks and fish in abundance. They had now gotten along in the world, as they had a log house and a pen close to the corner of the house with two fat pigs in it. The corn field just back of that, with full, fat ears of corn, was ready to gather. The sure- to-hit gun was kept close at hand , for wolves and bears were plentiful. #3- One night , Mary Barbara called saying Isaac, the bears are at our pigs. Up jumped Isaac and snatched his gun and ran after the squeeling pig through the corn field. The bear, finding she was pursued, dropped the pig and ran. Isaac ran also and just as the bear climbed the fence near the marsh, Isaac ran also and just as the bear climbed the fence Isaac let fire and the bear dropped. Isaac ran to the house, got his butcher knife and stuck the pig, for it was disabled by the bear. So morning came with lots of work, the pigs to dress and the bear to skin. The pig gave them a barrel of pork for the winter and lots of fat to fry for pancakes. The bear gave him $10.00 of a bounty for the head. Also, $10.00 for the hide and tallow to keep them in candles for two years. Isaac secured apple seeds and planted them. Trees grew and were transplanted and in a few years the family came each year to get a supply of apples from the orchard on the old homestead. Mary B (Fralick) Asselstine died in 1849 at the age of 63. She was buried in Big Creek cemetery in North Fredericksburgh. Isaac Asselstine died June 25, 1860 and was buried beside his wife Mary in Big Creek cemetery. He was 82 years old. This cemetery was part of St. Warburgh's Anglican Church back in the early 1800s. In 1998 this cemetery was restored and Isaac and Mary's tombstone was also restored. Their great-great grandson Ross was one of the guests on Sept. 18 1998 for a dedication of the cemetery.
