Read More	The Franklin Republican, 17 Nov 1905, pg 3 DEATH OF ISAAC BERGAN A Former Johnson County Man Passes Away after Long Illness Isaac Bergan, a former resident of this county, died at his home in Vinton, Ia. on Sunday, November 12, after a long illness. Mr. Bergan was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky, September 3, 1828. When about three years of age he came to Indiana with his parents and remained here until he reached his maturity. He was married in 1853 to Martha H. Voorheis of the Hopewell neighborhood, who died February 18, 1905. Eight children were born to them of whom the following survive: Joseph Bergan, Mrs. Rachel M. Hanna, Mrs. Mattie F. George, Everett D. and Guy L. Bergan, the three last named being residents of this state. Concerning his life the Vinton (Ia.) Eagle says “Mr. Bergan first came to Benton county in 1849 and entered 160 acres of land in Big Grove township. He then returned to Indiana and operated his father’s farm for about ten years. In 1859 he came to this county and settled permanently on the farm he had entered. On this farm he and his good wife lived and raised his family. In 1885 he retired from the farm and moved to Vinton and has resided here till his death. “His was a well-spent life and one well fit to emulate. He joined the Presbyterian church when he was 25 years old and remained a consistent member till the day of his death. After his coming to Big Grove he assisted in the organization of what is known as the Big Grove Presbyterian church and was one of its charter members. When he removed to Vinton he transferred his membership to the Vinton church and for many years has been one of its honored elders. As a man no words of eulogy could add to the stability of his character. His life was as consistent as it is possible for the human life to be. He was a devoted husband and father and he took a great interest in the social, civil and religious well doing of his township and county, but he would accept none of its emoluments. Occasionally he served as school director but other than that he had no taste for public life. His main interest was centered in his family. He was industrious and prospered. He added to the 160 acres of land he entered until his landed possessions reached 720 acres. Both he and his good wife lived to rear their family to the years of maturity and see them well settled in life for themselves.
