It is a most unfortunate, and in many respects a mysterious affair, for while it is known who did the shooting and where it occurred, the cause for the shooting is shrouded in mystery. Ike Robinson, well-known teamster of the city, is the dead man, and Conrad Klute, a well-known miner residing about a mile west of the Fifth ward, is in jail and has admitted the shooting. It seems that Robinson drove to the Klute home about 7:30 o'clock Saturday evening. He had some liquor and he and Klute sat by the kitchen table for several hours talking and drinking and it is presumed that both became somewhat intoxicated. About 11:00 o'clock a quarrel suddenly arose over something, which perhaps will never be known. Klute became violently enraged and rushed to another room and secured his revolver. Robinson grabbed him and threw his hand up and the first shot went through the ceiling. Klute then freed himself from Robinson's hold and fired again. This time the ball entered the center of Robinson's abdomen, making seven or eight perforations in his intestines. Robinson fell to the floor, but got to his feet and staggered to the door. There he fell again, but again succeeded in getting to his feet and reached his sled where he fell on some grain sacks. Sometime after he was found there by passers-by and the sheriff and police were notified. They went to the Klute home and found him still lying there and in a very weakened condition. He was brought to Boone and rushed to the hospital where doctors cared for him, but it was realized from the first that he could not live. He died at 7:50 o'clock Tuesday morning. Klute was arrested and placed in jail. He admitted the shooting, but has appeared unconcerned about it. He claimed that he shot Robinson because the latter had insulted his wife. This Robinson denied and Mrs. Klute also has stated that Robinson had not insulted her. Robinson signed a sworn statement before his death charging Klute with willful and deliberate murder and that the shooting was wholly without provocation. It has never been the policy of The Democrat to try such cases out in the paper in advance. We merely give the known facts and leave the details to be brought out in the trial which of course must follow. There are a dozen conflicting stories about the affair, none of which may be true, and it is possible that the exact cause of the shooting may never be known. Klute was arraigned before Justice Carswell Tuesday afternoon. He waived examination and was held to the grand jury under $10,000. He has retained D. G. Baker to look after his interests and now refuses to talk about the matter. The funeral services for Mr. Robinson were held from the Gospel Tabernacle at 10:00 o'clock Thursday morning, conducted by the Rev. J. C. Crawsord (sic), burial in East Linwood. Robinson had lived here for many years and leaves a splendid family to mourn his sad taking off. They are given the sincere sympathy of the community. He was 54, and the father of four: Luella, Lee, Edith, and an infant that died. His wife Nellie was b. July 1856 in ILL. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Conrad Klute (b. 1862-3 in Germany) did spend some time at the Fort Madison Penitentiary (see the 1915 Iowa State Census), but where and when he died is not easily ascertained. Some of his family is buried in Boone Co., and it is likely he and his wife, Mary Lampe, are also interred here, perhaps in unmarked lots.
