Funeral services for the late Isaac Hiatt, the last Civil War veteran living in Moravia, were held from the home, Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock, at which time a large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay their respects to the memory of one who has made this community his home for more than eighty years. Rev. D.W. Thompson of the United Brethren Church delivered the address and music was provided by the American Legion quartet. Members of the American Legion also acted as pallbearers and formed the military escort which accompanied the remains to the Moravia cemetery where the interment was made, the customary salute being given by the firing squad and taps being sounded by the buglar. --- Obituary. Isaac Hiatt was born in North Carolina, August 17, 1840, and passed away at his home in Moravia, Iowa, August 8, 1928, at the age of 87 years 11 months and 22 days. Death came after a lingering illness but he was contented with his lot and had never complained.. When but 6 years of age he came to Iowa with his parents and for the past 82 years has made his home in and near Moravia. His life has been one of industry, the greater part of which has been spent on the farm. Comrade Hiatt was a soldier in the Civil War and fought on the winning side because it was right. He was a member of Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry. He was the last surviving member of his company and was also the last veteran of the Civil War residing in Moravia. Two sons, three daughters, one brother, one sister and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn his passing, his companion having preceeded him in death seventeen years ago.
