LUCE, agent at various points for the Puget Sound Warehouse Company, was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, in 1847. He is, however, a very early pioneer of the west, having accompanied his parents on their long journey across the plains in 1853, arriving in Lane county, Oregon, on October 2 of that year. He was educated in subscription schools and later in those maintained at public expense, continuing his studies until he arrived at the age of seventeen years, after which he began teaching. This was his profession for the ensuring ten years, though in February, 1878, he removed to Whitman county, and took a preemption and timber culture, with a view to ultimately getting into a more profitable and less itinerant business than teaching. He, however, spent a portion of his time in the school-room during the first two years of his residence here. He is now the owner of four hundred and eighty acres of land near Fallon, all of which he farms to wheat. For the four years following 1888 our subject was in the employ of McConnell & Chambers in their warehouse business, and at the end of that time he purchased the establishment. He maintained it on his own account until 1896, when he sold out to Heisland & Warner, for whom he worked a couple of years. He then accepted a position with the Puget Sound Warehouse Company, where he continued until January 1, 1901, when he resigned. In addition to the real estate above referred to Mr. Luce is the owner of some valuable property in Pullman, which is now being occupied by renters. Our subject is especially interested in political matters and has been a candidate for two offices, and still retains the interest in the cause of education which his early professional experience served to engender and foster. This he has manifested by the faithfulness with which, when elected to the office, he discharged the duties of school director. He was justice of the peace twice in Oregon. He was a candidate for clerk of the superior court in 1892 but was defeated. In 1900 he was the nominee of the Republican party for county commissioner, but did not succeed in the election. Mr. Luce was married in Lane county, Oregon, in 1874, to Miss Lucinda Petty, a native of Oregon, and they became parents of eleven children: Eva, Nora, Henry, Van, Clay, Ira, Dean, Isaac W., Living, and Lara, John and Clara, Deceased. Miss Lorinda Petty and Mr. Isaac K. Luce were married in Lane County, Oregon on 07 Nov 1874. They were married by George Whitney. The witnesses were John Petty and E. J. Wovton, both of Lane County. This information came from the "Washington Marriage Return Form" for their daughter, Nora Luce. Henry Luce, born 1879, in the Washington Territory is missing from those listed at their memorial.
