Pleasant, Iowa, seven months before Iowa was admitted as a state. His parents were among the first settlers in Henry county, Iowa, having moved there about 1841. When he was 18 years old. Mr. Griffith drove an ox team to Denver but soon returned to his native state. In 1878 he married Julia Ann Ferren at Carroll, Iowa, and to them were born three children, Charles E. Griffith of Los Angeles, Mrs. Vida C. Kunce of Villisca and Roy L. Griffith of Des Moines. OBITUARY - Isaac Newton Griffith was born 3 Mar 1813 to John and Hannah Griffith, the ninth of ten children (eight of whom survived childhood). Isaac was born on a farm near Milton, West Virginia, where his father had an 80-acre farm. John Griffith, Isaac's father, died when Isaac was only 3 years old. Isaac lived with his mother, Hannah (Thornburg) Griffith until he married in 1834. The family moved to Green county, Ohio around 1820. Around 1845 Isaac moved his family to Henry county, IA. they moved to Carroll, Ia in 1869. Isaac operated his first general store south of the C. & N. Railroad tracks. His store resembled the old-time trading post. He traded for furs with early day trappers and Indians. Fire destroyed his first store and he relocated north of the tracks about where the Carroll. His home was on the corner of Sixth and Court Streets. He suffered 2 or 3 years from cancer and died of it. Carrol Times Herald - Thursday , July 11th, 1991 - The Carroll County Historical Society provided the following biographical sketch of Isaac Griffith: (with additions from his gr great grandson James Griffith.) He was born in Virginia (the area is now in West Virginia) in 1813, the son of John and Hannah Griffith. His Welsh father and Quaker mother reared eight children. John died when Isaac was 2. Isaac lived on the family farm until he was 12, at which time his mother moved the family to Greene County, Ohio. He then began learning how to dry and oil leather and make shoes, a trade he followed for many years. A Democrat and strong prohibitionist, he was a member of the Masonic order. Signet Lodge No. 264. He married a Virginia-reared Quaker, Paulina Johnston. The couple had six children. Isaac took his family to Mount Pleasant in Henry County and in 1849, moved to Mahaska County, where he operated a 160-acre farm. "They were abolitionists, and Virginia was not real keen on that, so they moved to Ohio," James said. After Paulina died in 1850, Isaac married New York native Cordelia Lawrence. They had two more children. In 1852, the family moved to Marshall County, where Isaac purchased a saw and grist mill. While there, Cordelia produced the first bolt of cloth to be milled in the county. Two or three years later, he moved the family to Poweshiek County, where he followed the mercantile trade. He moved to Carroll In 1869 and sold the first dry goods in town. His customers came from as far as Sac, Crawford and Calhoun counties. Isaac purchased a large quantity of furs one season, about $10,000 worth. He retired in 1883. An 1889 biography now in the Carroll County Historical Museum states, "He says language would fail to depict the trials, hardships and good times the early settlers had." Isaac's son, James E. Griffith, was the first attorney to practice in Carroll County. Another son, Eli, operated a store in Carroll as late as 1906. … Eli was in his 30s and playing bass drum in the Carroll town band. James said. "On one Fourth of July parade, the band was on a wagon and he was sitting facing backwards, beating the drum," he said. "Well, there was a new girl in town. She was Miss Liberty in the parade and she was on the float right behind him. Old grandpa Eli was beating the drum and watching Miss Liberty and saying "That's the prettiest girl I ever saw in my life. I'm gonna marry her." And he gave her this diamond and married her."
