Mr. Spease represented the grand pioneer class of men whose early sacrifices and endurance opened up this country to hand down to us the ease, security and comforts we now enjoy. He has buffeted with the storms of this life for seventy one years, but so much sunshine hovered about him that it dispelled storm clouds when they appeared. Twenty- two years ago he moved into Douglas township, where he died, and helped to turn the prairies into waving fields and shady groves. Years of plain, honest modesty has drawn about him those who shed tears at his departure. Loving hands bore his poor body to the cemetery in his township Who rests his head upon the lap of mother earth," while the spirit life has gone to watch and beckon to those behind."
