Dirks, son of Tobias and Elisabeth, nee Schmidt, Dirks, was born December 21, 1878, near Pawnee Rock, Kansas, and departed this life July 15, 1951, at 2:35 A.M. at the Bethel Home, Montezuma, Kansas, where he was a resident since January 21, 1951, having reached the age of 72 years, 6 months, and 24 days. In his early boyhood he with his parents moved to the Durham-Tampa vicinity, where he received his elementary education at the Red Top school. He was joined in marriage with Rachel Koehn on December 19, 1902. They established a home on a farm northwest of Durham, which he purchased before his marriage. This was their home all of their lifetime. They mutually shared their joys and sorrows for 39 years. On June 7, 1941, his companion was called home, leaving him alone to endure many of life's burdens. They lived on a farm north of Halstead for many years, and about 7 years ago they moved to their present home in Halstead. For nearly 7 years she has been suffering with a weak heart, spending much of her time in bed. His lonely hours were spent in prayer and meditation, giving him strength to carry on in life. Often when troubles and sorrows assailed him, by faith he visioned a better land and proclaimed it by singing his favorite hymn-"There's a land that is fairer than day, and by faith we can see it afar." We have the assurance that father has gone to that better land. In his lingering affliction he often gave his testimony that he was ready and willing to be absent from the body and present with the Lord. Over 40 years ago father felt his need of a Saviour, and being convicted of sin and judgment to come surrendered his heart and life to the Lord and accepted Christ as his personal Saviour. Upon the confession of his faith he was baptized and added to the fellowship of the Church of God in Christ, keeping the faith until the end. He is survived by ten children, Hannah (Mrs. Dan Koehn) Montezuma, Kansas; Jacob, of Wichita, Kansas; Irvin of Tampa, Kansas; Tobias, of Durham, Kansas; Mary (Mrs. Joseph Unruh) of Tampa, Kansas; Leona (Mrs. William Koehn) of Burns, Kansas; Gustaf of Durham, Kansas; Irene (Mrs. Dale Rhodes) Tampa, Kansas; Martha (Mrs. Dayton Unruh) Gypsum, Kansas and Melvin of Tampa, Kansas; five sons-in-law; five daughters-in-law; twenty-nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five brothers; two sisters, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing. One son preceded him in infancy. He was a good father to all of us here, He's gone to his Master, and mother so dear; We'll strive to press onward with heaven our goal, The land of the living, the home of the soul. We'll miss him no doubt, in our pathway of life, But he's gone to the land where there is no strife, No heartaches, no pains, no sorrow, no tears, He's gone to the land where there's no earthly fears. He wasn't all perfect-God forbid that we say, But he strove in his living to show us the way, To God the Creator and Father of all, To one who is willing to help when we fall. We lay him to rest now; it saddens our heart, He's gone to the land where dear ones ne'er part. He trusted in Jesus, his Master and Friend, And now he is with Him where joys never end. -The Children and Grandchildren Funeral services were conducted July 19, in the Logan Mennonite Church of Durham. Words of comfort were taken from Job 7:1; Psa. 90:9,10; Heb. 9:27,28, by Min. Claude Unruh. Interment was made in the nearby cemetery.
