Her indomitable spirit and incessant cheerfulness will be sorely missed by everyone who ever knew her. She was born July 21, 1934, to Frank L. and Frances (Hudoklin) Smith and remained a lifelong Helena resident. Isabel graduated from Helena High School in 1952 and, in that same year, began working for the Veterans Administration at Fort Harrison. Throughout her 33 year career, she was appreciated and recognized as an exemplary employee receiving many commendations and promotions. She was the president of the legal secretaries for the state of Montana and a national representative of the Helena Association of Legal Secretaries. In 1971, she was Legal Secretary of the Year for the state of Montana and a 1972 nominee for the Helena Federal Executive Association Employee of the Year. Following retirement she served on the board of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Isabel was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 10010, the SNPJ Lodge and the St. Louis Lodge. Although Is never married, she had many four-legged children, including, but not limited to, Mitzi, Bridget, Prince, Webster, Pixie and Tiger Lily. Isabel loved animals and was always willing to take in a stray or pet sit for a neighbor. Isabel had many interests including camping and fishing, bowling, reading, puzzles and games, and collecting Emmett Kelly figurines. She was also an avid minor and major league baseball fan. Go Braves!!! Isabel was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Joseph W. Smith and Robert J. Smith. Her surviving relatives include brothers, Francis (Kanky) Smith of East Helena and Kenneth Smith of Lead, S.D.; and sister-in-law, Florine Smith Foster of Helena. She is also survived by nieces, Cassandra Smith of Michigan, Marla Thompson of Townsend, Angela Smith of Idaho, Leslie Smith of California and nephews, Neil Smith of California, Mark Smith of Fort Benton, Stan Smith, Curtis Smith of California and numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, at St. Ann's Cemetery in East Helena. Following the graveside service, the family would like to invite all who knew and loved Is to a luncheon at the V.F.W. Club in East Helena. In honor of Is' love and generosity to animals, donations may be made to the Lewis & Clark Humane Society P.O. Box 4455 Helena, Montana 59604, the St. Ann's Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 525, East Helena, Montana 59635 of to an organization of the donor's choice.
