Jacobs, After Illness of Several Weeks Succumbs Mrs. J. W. Jacobs, one of Cherokee County's pioneer settlers, departed this life shortly after three o'clock this morning after an illness of several weeks duration, death being due to dropsy of the heart. Isabel Betzer was born in Ross County, Ohio, November 6, 1849. When a few years old her parents moved to Illinois then to Iowa, coming to Kansas in 1863. Three years later she was wed to John W. Jacobs in Nimeka [Nemaha] County and 1868 they moved to Cherokee County, coming to Galena thirty-four years ago, and resided at 406 Galena avenue, where they have ever since resided. To their union were born ten children, of whom only five are living. Mrs. Jacobs was a splendid Christian woman, besides being a kind. loving wife and mother she was ever doing some generous charitable deed to brighten others lives. At the age of eleven years she became a member of the United Brethren church, but on coming to Galena there was no class of that denomination here so she united with the Methodist Episcopal church twenty-seven years ago, during a revival which was held that winter in the Episcopalian church, the Methodists at that time having no building of their own. Mrs. Jacobs was also a charter member of the Degree of Honor and of the Women's Relief Corps and it has been said of her that she was the greatest worker along charitable lines among all the W.R.C. members. Mrs. Jacobs leaves a husband and five sons and daughters to mourn her loss, all of whom were at her bedside when death came, also one brother and three sisters and ten grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. Eva Kincaid of Badger and Mrs. Delia Hildreth, residing at Keystone, Oklahoma. The sons, Melvin H. Jacobs of Aurora, Mo., and Floy and Ray Jacobs of Galena. Her brother, I. W. Betzer of Chandler, Oklahoma, and sisters, Mrs. Mary Kutz resides at Mineral, Mrs. Silisba Borland residing in Quaker Valley and Mrs. Julia Rohrbaugh residing in McCune. No definite funeral arrangements will be made until word is received from her brother who has been in California for several months. [The same article was repeated in a later newspaper, with this addition:] Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church. The services were under the auspices of the W. R. C. and the Degree of Honor conducted by Rev. Bronston, interment being made in the Galena cemetery. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, the cortege being of great length.
