Description	:	Isabella (Kelley) Davis was said to be a very strong-minded woman and a teetotaler. According to her great granddaughter Dora, her father Thomas Clark would say about Isabelle, that she lived so long because “the Devil didn’t want her and the the Good Lord didn’t know what to do with her,” and that she was often in other people’s business. According to Dora’s account from her father, Isabelle would treat you like family no matter how distantly related you were. A distant cousin was as good as a first cousin. This tight-knit clan-based view may be attributed to Isabella’s Irish and Scottish roots. Her mother’s parents, James Snoddy b1755 and Martha (Owen) Snoddy b1759, were both born in Ireland. From History of That Part of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys Vol II (page 591), we know that James Snoddy came from County Londonderry, Ireland, about 1800, with his wife, whose maiden-name was Mary Owens; she was the daughter of a Scotch gentleman. They first settled in Chester County; then lived a few years in Buffalo Valley; then moved to White Deer, and settled on the farm John H Schooley now resides upon. They and their ancestors are noted for their longevity, usually reaching from ninety-seven to one hundred and six years. James and Mary had three sons- Samuel, William and James; six daughters- Margaret, Rachel, Mary, Martha, Katherine and Isabella. James married Christiana Schooley; one of their sons is Colonel W W S Snoddy, a prominent lawyer of Sedalia, MO. Samuel married Susan Kuhns, and have a son- J. Donaldson Snoddy, an attorney in Kansas; William married Ann Irwin; Margaret married James Ellis; Rachel married Daniel Lyle; Mary married Thomas Silliman; Martha married Benjamin Kelly; Katherine married John W. Henry, of Philadelphia. Born in 1834 in Marion Co Ohio to Benjamin and Martha (Snoddy) Kelley, who had married and moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio early, Isabella Catherine Kelley was raised in both Marion and Hardin Counties. Although likely born “Isabella” after her mother’s sister who married William Schooley, and “Catherine” for her other sister who married John Henry Schooley, she often went by “Isabelle” as the two were considered interchangeable at the time. However, she was also known by friends and family as just “Belle.” We find on the back of some old photos where she signs off as “Aunt Belle” and yet others where she is addressed as aunt or grandma Belle. However, she still signs her daughter’s graduation autograph book as “Isabella C Davis.” Isabella Catherine Kelley was married to William Howard Davis in Marion County OH on February 17th 1853 just before her 19th birthday. After their wedding, William H Davis and Isabelle, like many young people of the day, made an adventurous move west to Appanoose Iowa. However, they quickly returned to Marion county Ohio after less than a year, just prior to the birth of their first child, Joshua Milton Davis on October 31 1854. They stayed in Marion county for three more years before moving to Hardin county near where her parents were then living. Isabella Kelley and William H Davis had seven children, according to historic account of Hardin County, although only three made it to adulthood. Six were on record: Joshua Milton born 1854, Jane A born 1857 who died before 1870, Charles C born 1858, Martha N born 1861 who died when she was three, Alpha Lucinda born 1869 who died early, and finally Sarah Maria in 1878 when Isabella was 44 years old. Sadly, in 1906 Isabelle and William had to mourn the death of their beloved daughter Sara Maria (Davis) Carson. With only three of their seven children surviving to adulthood, outliving yet another child must have been difficult. Isabella was quick to insist on raising her 5 year old granddaughter, Mildred. On Monday February 17 1913, William H Davis and Isabelle (Kelley) Davis celebrated their 60’th wedding anniversary with a large celebration. Just a few months later on April 23rd, William Howard Davis died of a stroke at the age of 82, leaving an aging Isabelle to raise now almost 12 year old Mildred by herself. In 1930, Mildred married Thomas L Clark, and Isabelle moved in with her other grandchild, William H “Willie” Davis, eldest son of her son Charles C Davis, also living in Hardin county, likely close enough so she could still attend her church, Rhinehart Methodist Episcopal church, where she devoted much of her time. Isabella C (Kelley) Davis died on November 29th, 1932 at the ripe old age of 98 years old at the home of her grandchild Willie Davis. Although Isabella was quite well known, she had but a small obituary in the paper: One of Hardin County's oldest and well known residents was claimed Tuesday at 8 pm in the person of Mrs. Isabelle Davis. She passed away at the home of her grandson William H Davis in Mt Victory. The deceased was born in Marion County on February 26 1834 and was aged 98 years nine months and three days at the time of death. Although born in Marion County she lived practically all her life in the community of Mt Victory. She was a member of the Rhinehart Methodist Episcopal church. During her life she became acquainted with countless people who held her in highest esteem and regret to learn of her death. Surviving is one son, Charles C Davis of northeast of Mt Victory, one brother Joseph Kelly of Mt Victory; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 pm in the Mt Victory M E Church with Rev Thomas Smith of Alexandria, Ohio in charge. Interment will be in the Otterbein cemetery.
