Bluffton, Indiana Evening Banner Friday, August 10, 1917 – P2C4 Isabell Sprowl, daughter of Atkinson and Mary Edgar, was born in Pennsylvania July 13, 1843, and died August 3, 1917, aged 74 years and 20 days. She was married to John W. Sprowl July 25, 1867. To this union were born two daughters and three sons, three of the children being deceased. There are twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She also gave a home and mother's care to two boys not her own, from their infancy until their marriage. She became a charter member of the United Brethren church at Mt. Zion nearly forth years ago, to which church she was always true and loyal, being a faithful attendant when health would permit. She was a true companion, a good mother and a kind neighbor, always ready to helping time of need. She leaves to mourn, her companion, one son, one daughter, twelve grandchildren, with other relative and friends. We have lost a kind mother A friend to all others But she has gone to rest Where Jesus call his blesst. (Thanks to David Huffman for OBIT) ------------------ NOTES: First name: Memorial has "Isabele" spelling but research by James Craft is included here to suggest other spelling likely: The spelling of her first name varies from record to record: Isabella in the 1850 and 1860 US census records; Isabelle in the 1870 census record; Isabell in the 1900 census record; Isabelle in the 1910 census record; Isabelle in the IN Deaths record and the IN death certificate; "Belle" in the IN death certificate for son Henry; Isabella in her marriage record; and Isabella in her obituary. Based on that, I think the name was either Isabelle or Isabella (take your choice!). But none of the records spell it with a single "l" as the grave stone engraver did. I think he just ran out of room for the second "l". I've suggested Isabelle, partly because the later records tend to use that (and because of his son's death certificate using the diminutive "Belle"). Her Mother: explanation by James Craft: Her parents were Atkinson Edgar and Jane Mounsey. This requires a bit of explanation, because some records suggest that Jane's sister, Mary Ann, was the mother of Isabelle. However, Isabelle was born in 1847, and Atkinson married Jane Mounsey in 1846, so I believe it is clear that Jane was the mother, not Mary Ann.
